From r53 to r56?
Hi everyone im consdiering sellin the r53 and getting a jcw r56
How is the powerband compared to the r53
I have a pulley on mine so it seems like it has about same power all around, with the turbo im assuming not much power low and alotta tourque up top
What rpms does power in the jcw come in at
As far as modifying i want a 230-250 horsepower range it seems cheaper and easy to make bigger power with the r56 nowadays? Am i mistaken A fmic a good tune boost tubes and a free flowing cat/ decat ect
Hows a 250 hp r53 vs 250 hp r56 do reliability wise My r53 is at 94k shes fallin apart i like the r56 jcw cuz low miles and warrenty
Thanks guys id like to hear some jcw r56 guys imput

This article may be of interest, if you haven't read it already: http://www.motoringfile.com/2011/06/...cs-vs-r56-mcs/
I can only really add that in my MCS, full torque seems to come on at 2k rpm (MINI claims 1850) and lasts until 5k before tapering off sharply as the revs climb towards 6k.

Last year I switched from a '03R53 to a '07R56s (Its not a JCW so take what you will from this). One of the immediate things I noticed were the torque delivery in the R56 happens very soon. Stock there is a bit more torque, around 20-25 ft/lbs more I believe, and Its delivered waaaaaaay faster than the R53. As St G stated the torque in a R56 its delivered around 2k as oppsed to 4k in the R53. So the initial feeling from the car is that it has loads more power. And again this is just from the S model, so I would imagine the JCW would feel even more.
The second thing I noticed right away is the sound system sucks in the R56 compared to the R53. And I'm talking base sound systems in both cars. My R53 sound system was very good IMO. Could have used a little more base and clarity when up real loud, but it was still light years a head of my R56.
The peak power in the R56 comes in at 5500 instead of 6000 so thats another plus for the R56. I will say I liked the supercharger sound waaaaay better than the Turbo sound. That supercharger sound was from the gods. Very fulfilling. I could care less about the turbo sound.
R53 suspension was less forgiving, but better equipped when stock IMO. I never felt I really needed to upgrade anything in the R53. My R56 I have upgraded the RSB and it's close to the R53 but I'm going to need to do springs and struts to be the same or better.
Reliability depends vehicle to vehicle IMO. People generally say R53 was more reliable. However my experience has shown the R56 to be less costly to fix. There is also another local R53 owner that just had to sink about 3k in repairs and it was very lightly modded. Drop in filter & short shift is all. So reliability depends slightly on the person who owned the vehicle prior and how they treated the vehicle (assuming a used purchase for that point of course). Of course there are times where that doesn't matter. The N14 engine is notorious of Timing Chain, water pump, HPFP issuses. N18 not too bad, yet.
With tuning I think there is more to do on the R53. You can do the head, lower end work, pullies, tune, ect. While you could do the same on the N14, it would cost more. And perhaps its not as needed to produce the same amount of power. However, there have been people with both cars that have had an engine grenade due to poor or improper tuning. So reliability goes with the extremes of the tuning. With a JCW engine you should be able to achieve higher numbers more reliably compared to a R53.

No matter what id look for an N18 FJCW. Your pockets will be happier over time with issues the N14 carries.

Pretty much the JCW tuning kit has a JCW exhaust, JCW intake, and ECU remap with only an additional 7-9hp, if I remember correctly. As opposed to the FJCW where the engine has forged pistons, remap, and all the goodies from the turbo and exhaust.

It'll be a MCS with the JCW tuning kit. You'll know the difference if you look at the engine and by the badges. Also, the paper work should have the original sheet to mention if it's a FJCW or MCS w/JCW tuning kit.

N18 engine production start from June 2012.
FJCW car should have the gray color gauge face.
and only the retrofit JCW kit exhaust tip have the JCW logo on it.
hope these help.
R53 vs R56
R53 - gocart MINI - small, nimble and absolutely much more driver demanding.
R56 - faster, built better and easier to live with (as daily commute car) and the turbo whoosh sound.
Even I love my current R59, I still miss my R53 everytime I see one.
