Wheel and tire specs
#1
I was wondering if any one had the basic wheel and tire specs for the Cooper and Cooper S.
The specs I’m looking for are:
Diameter and width of stock wheel options
Offsets for different wheel sizes
Bolt pattern
Stock wheel weights
This is the basic information that any informed wheel purchaser should know when looking for wheels.

My thoughts on posting all the above information in wheel data was to provide offsets and wheel weights, two topics We do not normally offer on our cite. I can guarantee that all the foremensioned wheels will fit your Mini purfectly, as long as you adehere in tire sizing to my recomendation. Tirerack's recomended tire sizes will allow your spedometer, odometer, and abs systems to remain accuratly calculated. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. At Tirerack I am compensated on a performace basis, I would really appreciate your buisness.

Okay, here's everything I know about MCS wheels...
Bolt pattern is 4x100. Centerbore is 56.1mm.
The Cooper S comes standard with the R84, also known as X-Lite. It has a reasonable weight of about 18lbs. It's a 16" x 6.5" wheel, with a offset of 48. It looks like this:
With the sport package, you get the R85, also known as the S-Lite. It's not light, though, weighing in around 25lbs. It's a 17" x 7", with an offset of 50. Here's a pic of this one:
Then there's the R90, which is a dealer option. It's made by BBS. It weighs around 24lbs. Also a 17" x 7", offset is 48. Here it is:

Does anyone have similar info for the MC OE wheels? 15" and 16"?
If I've overlooked that info. somewhere in this forum I apologize - but, please point me in the right direction though!

Ok, I'll answer my own question! Here you go all:
OE 15";
R81 7-hole (aka Imola) ET45 12.0lb (5.45kg)
R82 8-spoke (aka Silverstone) ET45 15.2lb (6.9kg)
R86 star-spoke ET45 15.0lb (6.8kg)
R87 double-spoke ET45 16.5lb (7.5kg)
steel wheel 14.8lb (6.7kg)
space-saver wheel 12.7lb (5.75kg)
OE 16";
R83 5-star (aka Daytona) ET50 20.1lb (9.1kg)
R84 X-lite (aka Monza, V-spoke) ET50 17.6lb (8.0kg)
It appears that some of these wheels may not be available in the US. ??
Thanks to "Wheel" at MINI2. This information and more can also be found HERE.

I think the S-Lite name rather than being an indicator of wheel weight is a reference to the Classic Mini "sports" wheel named Mini-lite. The S-lite design looks very similar to the Minilite, close enough that they designer almost certainly was trying to replicate the old 10" design in a 17" wheel. It's possible that the extra weight comes from scaling up a design for a 10" wheel designed for a 1200lb car to a 17" wheel for a 2500lb car.

I have a couple of questions to pose in the OEM 16" vs. 17" debate.
First, many people have discussed about the weight of the 17" S-Lites. Is the weight due to wheels, or the tires, or both (meaning that the run-flat feature causes undue weight). Are the 16" run flats nearly as heavy? From the specs, the 17" are 1" wider. Is the extra width felt.
Second, for those of you who, like myself, are contemplating even light autocross racing, what would you recommend? The ideal situation would of course be 2 sets of wheels/tires (run flats for everyday, and racing set for auto-x). But that is a bit expensive. Assuming you have to stick with run flats (due to the lack of spare tire in every day driving), what's the best compromise in utility and performance?
Finally, for those of you doing a lot of autocross, do you race 16 or 17 wheels?
If you can't tell, I'm struggling with the wheel decision on my 04 IB/W MCS order. Looking for any thoughts/comments/opinions.
Thanks,
Spike

>>If it hasnt been said already MINI 2 has a wheel forum that has weights, offsets, etc... of many factory and aftermarket wheels.
So do we, at the top of the forum!

According to MINI2, the 17x7 S-Lite wheels alone weigh 25.1 lbs each. The original equipment 205/45 runflats from Dunlop and Pirelli are 21.9 and 22.0 lbs each, respectively.

>>Thanks for the feedback, but I'm not really interested in specs and such. I'm more interested in how people handle the various questions I posed previously about 16 vs 17 and daily vs. racing situations. If you have any comments on these, I would most appreciate it.

From what I've read on other racing forums is to go with a dedicated race/track set of wheels/tires. While it's more expensive initially, you will probably be better off as tires meant for performance will be softer and wear faster. Get a set of sticky tires for track use and have the run-flats for everyday motoring. Additionally, track use and aggressive really beats on tires, so you will want to save the sticky ones for the track, IMHO.
16" vs. 17": At OctCooperfest last year, the winning A-X car was running 16" wheels. I asked about it and the general consensus is the Mini doesn't weigh enough to benefit from 17" (or larger) wheels and the 16" combo is lighter. Weight matters. I know from mtn bike racing that I go with the lightest/fastest rolling tire I can get away with. Wheeled sports are not much different in that regard.
