Black Forest Run: 25 May 07
Folks,
For anyone interested, I'm heading to the Black Forest on 25 May for a day of twisties.
Yes, I'm going on a Friday -- no work for me that day.
I'm planning on heading out from Heidelberg in the morning, probably around 9. 1st stop will be Hausach. From there, it'll be over the hill toward Oberharmersbach and Oppenau. Then it will be north, to Lichtental, before cutting east some to Bad Herrenalb. Last stop will be the Esso at the north end of the schwarzwald. Here's a Google Earth file of the route.
Should be a fun day of driving. I plan on a mid day picnic somewhere -- an empty field or the like. 10 day forecast currently shows clouds, with rain that weekend. Clouds are fine for me -- shoot, even rain is fine for me. Less photo opportunities, but still good driving.
Interested? Let me know. This is part of the train up for the 14 July trip.
And yes, the roads there really do look like this (I took this photo on my 6 May trip):

Brother, I wish I could be there with you. I'm now actually DREAMING at night about how awesome a run through the Black Forest would be... thanks for that.
Maybe when I get the warp drive and flux capacitor mods on Blimey I can join you...
Have a blast (like someone has to give you permission...)

Good run today. We headed out this AM, from the Esso in Leimen. I turned off the GPS at lunch, but you can see in this Google Earth file from today, that we stopped for lunch right at the next major turn. Make the right turn there, stay left, and head north into the second phase of twisties.
Oh, and color coding of this file is by speed. I think I was hitting 90-95 mph down the autobahn -- Friday rush hour, you know.

What's shown in the Google Earth file is about 3.5 hours of driving. That's from Leimen / Heidelberg down the autobahn, and about 1/3 of the way back up. This section also included the slowest section -- a good stretch of gravel! It's kind of like driving on goat trails, really. Here is an updated Google Earth file, with Esso and gravel annotated.
And to be honest, you could spend an hour dirivng in the forest, or you could spend 10. The stretch in this file -- Hausach to Oppenau -- is a nice stretch that covers all of the different things that make driving the forest so awesome: twists, mountains, tiny roads, more twists, and scenery, scenery, scenery. I like to head south, and then work my way up. I recently have started to exit at 57a, because there's an Esso right there that I know takes fuel coupons. I'd love to find a free weekend, and head all the way south, and hit the twisties in the lower Black Forest -- they look to be awesome. But, for a day trip, I can easily start in the middle, and head north from there.
If you decide to come down, let me know -- I've got a guest room. And I'm sure Smiley would TC for you, or even drive your car for you, if, well, you get tired or need a nap or something. He's like that -- he gives and he gives and he gives.
