R56 DSC or No DSC?

I had the opportunity to try my '07MC (A/S tires) on icy highways this past weekend. There was a stretch where there were no others cars as far as I could see either ahead or behind me. So I experimented a little. I could tell the difference with DSC 'on' and 'off'. I also confirmed that DSC can be overwhelmed by the laws of physics. That said - I'm glad I got it.

It was ranked as the third most popular "must have" option here on NAM:

I've had it go off a couple of times on wet pavement--mildly. OTOH, it was inoperative on my husband's BMW about a year ago. We went on a drive with the local BMW club---big string of cars--and at one sharp corner, with very slow speeds, everyone went through without a problem. Except us--we slid sideways. No damage--got it under control pretty quickly, but it was a good lesson on how well it works. We were only going about 25 mph.

The DSC is like an idiot proof thing. Definitely never useful on dry pavement. Snow and ice there are small possible benefits, but its more of a tire thing then. Now the hill assist could be a good reason to get it, but personally I rather avoid adding things to my car that could break. It seems to be the source of some problems with the R56.

dsc probably fails at the same rate as abs, so should we get rid of abs? even on dry pavement on rare occasions when you lose traction at high speed, it can be helpful. true, on hot dry days in socal, i almost always make it a point to turn it off, and it can be turned off completely, not like the lexus ones that still kick in once it's *off.* it's probably one of the few new electronic gizmos that's really really worthwhile. i think the original poster got the point, he's gonna order dsc =P

It's not idiot proof. Idiots can still turn it off.
Could you explain, please? Such a blanket statement really needs to be backed up with facts.
Why only small?
You mean like a turbo, or a radio, or sunroof, or...
What problems?

If you drive in snow DSC may be much more of a necessity. My first MINI did not have DSC and I never once missed it. My current MINI does have DSC and it has kicked on now and again, but for little reason. However, I do not find it intrusive, and I do like the hill-assist feature so I'm good w/ having it.
