Rover to MINI
My last 3 cars have been Land Rovers. Actually I still have a 75 SIII military rover I'm fixing up. Never thought about a mini till I spent over $100 on a fill-up which I knew would last only 4-5 days. that was last week and I now have a clubman and just logged 38MPG on my way to work. what a blast to drive. what's up with the A/C vent in the glovebox? what an odd little car.

Welcome, Geoff! I'm an old Roverphile myself. Good to hear you've still got that SIII. I've wanted to pick up an old SII or SIII 88 to fix up for awhile now, but between a new baby and all my other hobbies, I guess I have to be realistic.
Though if you're coming from Rovers past a certain vintage, I'm not sure you can call the Mini odd. I mean, my Defender had the ignition on the wrong side of the steering column, the battery under the seat, and a "waggy" speedometer that wavered between 0 and 12 mph when idling at a light.
The Mini's quirkiness is one of the things that drew me to it in the first place. Though so far it's a LOT more reliable than the old D90 (no bolts sliding into cooling fan, no engine fires...it starts reliably...).

welcome and congrats!
i love land rovers too, tho i'm slightly more into the newers ones like the 1st gen range rovers and disco 1's. the mini makes a great daily driver while not tinkering w/ your landys
oh and the a/c vent in the glove box and be turned off if the maps and papers in there get too cold

Hi Doogs and roadus,
yes you are correct the odd features on the mini instantly drew me. the top mpg for a gas only car on yahoo tempted me to find a dealer and see one. I had no idea the clubman was a new thing. I just saw some minis on the lot and thought I liked the big one. after 1 drive my wife and kids and I were in love -- bought the next day. Here's a picture of my S111 75 british military. its getting there.
