Hi all from a newbie

I joined the ranks of Mini owners this past June. I latched on to a friends 02 Base model before he could trade it in. He planned on buying a Clubman but, ended up with a Smart, no accounting for taste. His loss, my gain. He is a little eccentric so my 02 only had 11500 miles on it. I have had a few issues with it, a bad positive battery cable and a rear hatch rattle as well as haunted windows. All were rectified with a few new parts and consulting some TSB's.
A little background on me, I own an auto repair business in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, I have a degree from Southern Illinois University in Applied Science, I am a factory trained Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, VW and Nissan tech. I also am an ASE certified master tech.
I commute 100 miles a day so my 37 to 40 mpg is important but, this car is a gas to drive. I'd like to add cruise control and find the best way to connect my ipod. I hope that's what I'll find out here.

Congrats and welcome!

I believe I saw a thread on adding cruise control. I assume you will have to add the multi-function steering wheel, etc. Just not sure as the early MINIs have a different steering wheel. Search the threads. There is a ton of info on Ipods in the audio forum.

Wiley, welcome to MINI-dom and NAM...sounds like you found a gem!

Swflaboy is correct; there are several threads here on NAM that deal with retro-fitting cruise control into the 1st Gen MINI. And he's also correct in that it also requires the MFSW. Most quotes I've seen for this work runs in the $1500-$2000 category but it sounds like you're fairly handy with cars so you might be able to offset some of the labor.

The Motoringfile article at the following link comes highly recommended by many. While it's labeled a buyer's guide, it will give you an idea of some of the quirks of the early 1st Gen MINIs and things that you should keep an eye out for maintenance-wise:

http://www.motoringfile.com/mini-r50r53-buyers-guide/

Again, welcome!
