A football field is about 300 ft long and about 160 ft wide.
I figure about 29 cars across and about 23 cars lengthwise.
29x23 is 667 and 6000 divided by 667 is 8.99.
So about 9 football fields.
My head hurts.

Nice, a day before it lands I find it being tracked:
http://marinetraffic.com/ais/default...ntery=38.74911
AND it says it won't be in Charleston until 12:30 tomorrow NIGHT....so basically 12:30 Thursday morning. :-(

Right you are! Nice buffet, relaxing drive off the boat and to the VDC, before it opens at 6:00am the next morning :-)

It's roughly 450nm from Hampton Roads to Charleston. At 13kts, that's about 35 hours. Assuming they speed up to 16kts, which is listed as their avg, that's about 28 hrs. Say 30 total, because they have to slow and negotiate harbor traffic, tie-up, etc.
It's 0130Z now. That should mean 0730 on the 25th. Where am I going wrong. Will they make 19kts (max speed) down the coast or is my time conversion/addition wrong?
Did another measure and found I could get close to 400nm, so that would add up to 25 hours.

Back to the 24th
It must be coming in late in the evening, because as of now, it is showing up as the 24th again on the Port Charleston schedule site.

Wed evening and I've lost track of GH. Would expect her into port in the next 3 to 4 hours is the 25hr est was right.
After looking closely at AIS, it appears that Charleston is not a covered area. So, I looked at Oregon Highway's off-shore distance. It had not reached the 32d latitude where coverage appears to end. Assuming GH had dropped below that line and assuming it ran the same distance from the coast, it should be within 146nm of Charleston.
That means a maximum time of about 15 hours. Now, we know that is too far. All our estimates project no more than 60nm out of port (about 4 hrs). Personally, I am betting on 1-2 hrs.

Faust
Hey! Someone else on the Faust! I know it was scheduled to be in NYC today, but do you have any confirmation? It looked like it was running late into Halifax.
