Supercharger going bad

I just got a report from my mechanic that the supercharger on my 2004 mini is going bad. He says it is a bad bearing although the belt is still in good shape. I'm just wondering if this should really be happening at 61K miles. I do not race the car. I drive it to and from work each day, about 20 miles RT and to the beach 2 or 3 times a month, about 300 miles RT. Any thoughts out there or additional questions I should bring to my mechanic? He also tells me that the local dealer ackowledges bad superchargers starting to show up and that Mini now has an upgraded supercharger for replacement. This costs approximately $1600. Ouch!

Found this link that may help with a repair versus a replacement.

There is an outfit in Fla that rebuilds superchargers, you'll have to do a search in the correct model section. it is reasonable 500 or so. it's the labor you are charged that kills you. replace the waterpump and its drivetrain at the same time (it's driven by the SC)
