Safe to drive LA to SF with only 500 miles on odometer?
I have only had my 09 mini cabrio for a few weeks and i am trying to break it in before my trip up to san francisco from los angeles. however, it looks like i might only have 500 to 600 miles on it by the time i need to go. should i cancel the trip or is there a way to drive (with pit stops etc) that will insure the safety of my new mini engine??

There should be no problem as long as you keep the engine revolutions below 4000 - 4500 and vary your speed. Get on the freeway and gradually accelerate to 65 then let the speed slowly drop to 60 then 55 then go back to 65 then 60 etc. As long as you vary the speed and don't do anything excessive the engine will be fine. You should also be gentle with the brakes and clutch during this period. By the time you are in SF, your car will be broken in.

Break in period
My first post was off the top of my head. Here is the Mini Cooper Official position on break in period.
The 2009 Mini Cooper Owner's Manual suggests that one "drive at varying engine and road speeds for the first 1200 miles...and do not exceed 4500 rpm or 100 mph." (!!!) SO...you have to wait until you drive back from SF to get your first speeding ticket in your new Mini.
The manual also recommend break in periods for the tires, brakes, and clutch. Drive it gently until you get to SF.

Yeah definitely try to take PCH! It makes the trip longer but so much more fun (or so I've heard, I always take the 5 to SF from OC, only because it wasn't in a MINI)
You should be fine. Avoid using cruise control. Vary your speed on the highway. Your trip back will be a lot more fun once its broken in!
