Thinking about '05 MCS

I've been in the market to replace my '85 SAAB SPG for a while now and just drive a Mini for the first time yesterday. These cars are awesome.

I need to sort out the logistics, but I'm going to try to pick up this Silver Cooper S this week. Is there any thing I should know about the 2005 in particular? How about Coopers in general? How are the electronics? It seems like there is a LOT going on as far as switches/electronics go. Are they pretty reliable in that sense? How about the tranny? I assume they have a Getrag, so that's confidence inspiring.

Anyway, thanks for any input. I've owned nothing but mid-80's SAABS for the last ten years, so this is quite a change for me. Oh, one last thing... Is there ANY possibility that I'll stick to my guns about keeping this thing stock? It certainly doesn't seem like it!

The 05 is the BEST Mini made! I own one and love it. It has been nothing but dependable and tons of fun to drive. I had an 05 non s and now I have an s. Just a great car. You won't be disappointed. And, the chances of you keeping it stock are... how do i say.... it's just not going to happen. embrace the mod spirit.

Haha, Welcome to the world of MINI. We're glad to have you. And you'll be glad you came!

Hey Tyler, welcome to NAM. First gen S's (R53's) are great cars, and the '05/'06 is what many consider the sweet spot. You might wanna read the buyer's guide on Motoring File. Lots of good info.

Things to know about Coopers in general: they corner as if on rails, can make you smile from ear to ear on the most mundane of errand runs, and have a fantastic owner community & support group for "the illness"

As for keeping it stock...mmmmm....probably not. My R53 outshines anything & everything I've ever driven in acceleration, handling, and fun factor, yet the allure of a CAI & reduced pulley are calling my name even now...

Best car decision I ever made

Welcome to the world of Mini...one year ago I bought an '05 MCS , Pure Silver with black roof, panoramic sunrfoof, all the goodies and 38K miles on it for far less than I would have paid for anything of equivalent performance.

Best car buying decision I have ever made, and one year later I am deeply (some would say crazy) in love with this car...I have just begun modding, with a 15% pulley and a Dinan intake , put Yokohama S-Drives on it and it just keeps getting better.

I have it on good authority that I am now 15 years younger, far better looking and much more fun to hang with than I was pre-Mini!

I wish you as joyful an experience I am having, and strongly recommend taking the plunge...

Thanks for the encouragement, guys! That buyer's guide was very helpful. And now I know that if this Mini falls through, to keep looking for a 2005/6. Hopefully I'll have some pictures to post soon enough. Oh yeah, does anyone want an '85 Saab with lots of performance stuff? Please, just take it...

So, I got it. I know what the big fuss is about now, this car is amazing! It's peppy enough in its stock form (not for long) to be fun, and handles great!

Are the power steering pumps particularly loud? Mine has that distinct whine, but it's not too bad. I'm surprised there is no opaque covering for the sunroof. I see that ZippeeShades makes a 'kit', but I would think there'd be a better way. Has anyone ever replaced the black mesh with something less transparent? Doesn't seem out of the question. Hmm. That's all I can think of for now, but any input would be great. Again, I can't believe I didn't join you guys sooner!

Grats Tyler, you have chosen wisely. Just so ya know, we love to see pics of new MINIs :hint hint:

I hear the power steering pump when I start my baby for the first time each day & as I back out of my driveway, but that's it. After that - even after sitting at work - I don't really hear it again. I kinda feel like my car is yawning & stretching before get-up-and-go time.

Sounds like you have a great appreciation for what the MCS is all about, and trust me, the love affair only gets stronger with time. Welcome to the family, and drive 'er in good health!
