That means the computer has stored a fault code. You need to find someone who can read it with a scanning tool. If you don't know anyone, an autoparts store near you may do it, or a mechanic.
It really can be anything and there is only one way to find out. Disconnecting the battery may or may not make it go out and/or clear it. Clearing it and waiting to see if it returns is a common thing that is done, though really it should be checked. You have to decide.

the 'check engine' light is almost always a warning of emissions problems. You get different warnings for other types of problems.
It can be as simple as a loose gas filler cap; but often turns out to be a failed oxygen sensor in the exhaust system.
Neither is 'critical' but yes you want to get the code read. Many large chain auto parts stores will read the code for you - they may not be able to clear it tho . . .
