I only say this to help warn anyone having something done on their Mini after picking it up.
Note the work I am about to talk about was done by a 3rd party as most dealers don't do tint (they outsource it) and they don't do custom vinyl work especially things that might be protected by licensing.

So I got my beautiful Custom Ordered Mini Cooper JCW R56 late last Friday night and on Saturday morning I went through it with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything was perfect and it was! So I took my Brand New Mini to a very recommended and recently #1 rated by our local rag newspaper Tint and Vinyl Shop. They did the tint and it looks great and they put on the Resident Evil Umbrella Corp "Umbrella" emblem.

The next day after taking pictures and posting the pictures I noticed a few bumps in the vinyl like sand or dirt and thought I will have to have them re-do some of this but on deeper inspection I found a tiny cut in my paint! So I pulled up part of the Vinyl to see how bad and it was bad and I got PISSED OFF thinking I might have 16 deep slices and ripped all the Vinyl artwork off of my car. Luckily only 1 major 18 inch razor slice in my roof, if you can call that lucky!

My Mini dealer has a bodyshop next door and after inspecting it today they said they can try to fix it and it will take 2 hours but they suspect the entire roof will need to be repainted!!!! WTH! On the good side the company that cut my roof apologized and told me to get it fixed and they will reimburse for the repairs. I am calmer now but I was so depressed yesterday after discovering the damage to my new Mini.

From now on, no one but my Dealer is touching my Mini unless I am aloud to stand over and watch everything they do.
With a gun!

Weaf,
How frustrating!!!!! There is a positive here -- good thing yuo are so **** that you found it now instead of later. Are you going to have them redo the artwork or are you finished with that? I can't believe they made the error and didn't own up to it right away. That really speaks to their level of customer service. Good thing they are stepping up to the plate and paying for the reapir.

Thanks GG! That's awesome! Glad your wait is finally over. I hope all goes as smoothly for me on this last leg of the journey. My MA told me only one day to do the installs, so I'd love to have her by Saturday. She's supposed to arrive on Wednesday. Fingers crossed!!

I really liked and wanted the artwork especially after seeing the disappointed look on my Son's face when I was ripping it off my roof. The only issue is that it has left me paranoid that someone else would may do even more damage and everyone keeps telling me to make them redo the Vinyl after I get the roof fixed but I will never let the company that damaged it EVER touch my car again. I am just happy that there is a way to fix it and that it won't cost me anything in the end. (If you can call that happy...I just wish it never happened.)

There are extremely skilled and competent vinyl folks in the MINI community.

My first stop would be to the dealer to find out who they use, because dealers don't do that work themselves, and discuss the job with the dealer's guy. Go directly to them, don't work through the dealership - it'll save you money.

The other option is to talk with Sunshine MINIs or the local MINI club in your area. They probably have some recommendations for good vinyl shops in the area. (Although I suspect that many give you the same answer I'm about to give you)

Head to MOTD, where both Aesthetic Creations and Todd's Mods will probably both be attending. Both are good options, although given the choice I'd go with Todd because I know him better, and he's worked on my cars before...

Weaf: That really sucks, but if you get it painted, and ALL the scratches and cuts taken care, of, hey maybe you might want to go to another color on the roof, something really different that is not offered by Mini. Just a thought. Anyway, at least it is repairable, and it is not something mechanical. Motor on.

Engine break-in period?

I read somewhere that I need to keep the engine below 4500 rpm during the break-in period. How long is the break-in period? Anything else I should know?

Wow. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of frustration and anger you went through with this whole thing. I hope that it gets sorted out and everything turns out good in the end.

You said they are paying for the repairs, are they reimbursing you the cost of the vinyl/tint as well? I would think that they would after the amount of trouble they caused.

1200 miles. Avoid full throttle, and also avoid steady engine speeds. Basically, no freeways or hooligan driving.

Enjoy!

Btw, this is from the "Driving Tips" section of the owners manual. There are lots of different theories on the Best Way to break in your engine, but it's generally safest to follow the manufacturers advice, especially if you want the warranty to hold. With all the electronics in modern engines, I suspect they can tell if you don't follow their suggestion...

Wondering how I'm going to avoid steady engine speeds when I take the freeway to and from work everyday. The way to work is bumper to bumper traffic, but my way home after going to the gym is usually clear. I'll have an automatic transmission. Does that make any difference? The hooligan driving will be the hardest for me to avoid.

I'm really sorry to hear about what you've been through, Weaf. Glad you're getting everything rectified at their cost, but the fact that it even happened is horrible. After carefully building and then waiting so long for these babies, the thought of anything bad happening to one of them is the stuff of nightmares.

Just upshift or downshift with the paddles periodically. If you leave the shifter to the right, it will shift back to whatever gear it wants to be in after 10 seconds or so. This is an easy way to vary engine speed conveniently.

So good to be back.

Hi all. I bought my first MINI in 2002, and just ordered a 2013 hardtop yesterday. It's bringing back all those itchy feelings of anticipation as I watched the car move through the production line, onto the boat and across the pond. My production number isn't even active yet and I am already excited.

It will be hard to let my first baby go, but I'm sure the new one will help ease the pain. For those of you waiting for your first MINI, congratulations!! Even after 10+ years mine makes me smile every time I see it.
