Welcome aboard, and congrats on your purchase! I acquired my MINI after a long period of waiting, wanting, and lusting too, so I can say I know how you feel. 
My advice is threefold:
1) read through the First Gen forums here
2) find a good local independent MINI mechanic in your area (if you're not mechanically inclined yourself, which I'm not)
3) find a local MINI club and join in the fun
Drive 'er in good health, and Happy Motoring!
PS: final piece of advice is to wave at other fellow MINI motorers
