Newbie here with an 05' Cooper S and an issue

My Hello,

My name is Matt and i live just north of detroit, i've always loved these cars and i did some research and found one i wanted. 05' Cooper S in grey with a black roof and black hoop stripes. I picked up the car yesterday after having the dealership inspect it first and they did a very thorough job and the car checked out fine other than a leaking power steering line that i can replace no problem. Anyway so i took it for a nice little roadtrip with my gf and after about 200 miles i noticed the EML light came on. I pulled over turned off the car and back on and it went away, another 200 miles later it came back on... i did some quick research on my phone but not a ton of info at least that i could find. some say O2 sensor others say anything from gas cap not on tight to "be prepared to pay a lot of money". I turned it off then back on and it went away. Then on the last few miles home it came back on so i pulled over and turned the car off and on again and now the SES light is on but the EML light is off.. So please tell me i didnt just purchase a mess of issues. any suggestions?

Edit: just a quick pic

Could well be O2 sensor causing it. I had one go bad in 2008 and I got similar pattern of warning lights.

Pretty sure a place like Autozone or Pepboys will hook it up to a code reader and diagnose it for free. Good option since I would bet you don't have a warranty.

Yea its not under warranty, and that's what i was planning on doing 2moro and see what code its throwing. Hopefully its something simple like that, thank you, i'm slowly learning more and more about these cars and for that last couple days i've had it i love it so i would prefer to no get rid of it lol.

They are a blast to own and drive!

Hoping it's a minor issue for you.

And.... what are the chances the seller knew about this. Would have known you wouldn't experience the warning light until he or she got paid since the light wasn't coming on until the car was driven a while. Pretty crappy of the seller.

Not sure, its a possibility he seemed sort of shaddy but not really, thats another reason i had the dealer inspect it first. I'm just bummed it couldnt have been diagnosed then. But i've also found some threads saying the o2 sensor for MY 04-06 are under an extended warranty (10 year - 100,000 mile) which i would fall under that would be awesome

Did not know that. Will store that away in the long term memory area of my brain since we still own two first Gen MINIs. Thanks for that info!

Hope that is your issue! Keep us posted.

Welcome to the madness.

You will want to call this Chad at Detroit Tuned. You're lucky, you have a great mechanic in Detroit.
