1st time post, here goes...

Bought my 09 MCS a year ago, have had no real issues with it that weren't my fault. GF liked mine so much, she purchased a 2011 MC for herself after wrecking her Toyota.

Anyway, this site's been awesome for info all the way back when looking for a used MCS over a year ago, so thanks...and, um, hi!

Have you had any issues with your mini since you've owned it? I'm looking to buy a used one and looking at either 2008 or '09

No real issues. I've had intermittent noisy timing chain that seems to go away pretty quickly, and I've also had a couple Check Engine Lights, one because the dipstick wasn't pushed in all the way after I checked it which caused a crankcase pressure issue (light went out when I pushed the stick in all the way lol), and a p0579 which is the thermostat sticking open, which happens occasionally and then it goes away. The timing chain tensioner and the thermostat are both common known issues with this car, but thankfully while mine seems to have mild issues with both, neither have failed and both are going to be replaced by me soon. Other than those two little things, I've replaced the front brake pads at 25k miles, and that's it. The car is great to drive, great on gas, fast and feels well-built for the most part, and is comfortable on long trips too. If you are mechanically-inclined OR buying a certified pre-owned with a warranty, I'd say go for it, you'll love it! Just make sure you get the full history on the particular car, and know that as a high-performance European car, it's going to require a little more regular maintenance and expense than a Toyota. I'd also try to buy 2009+ as the first couple years of the r56 seem to be more trouble than the later ones. Go even newer if you can afford it.
