87, 89 or 93 .. Service Adviser has me confused ...

Hello everyone,

I was recently informed by a Service Adviser I shouldn't use 93 octane gas and stick to 89 because 93 is not actually good for the car. He said "Once in a while, to clean up some deposits is fine, but not always."

I should take a moment and mention, money is not an issue. I say this because I went from a Dodge HEMI 4x4 truck which my son now owns to my MINI. The savings in gas for me driving to work (mostly all highway - 68 miles a day) is incredible. So going 93 on the MINI is saving me A LOT compared to my former truck.

I only want what's best for my MINI. I researched Top Tier gas companies and found Shell where I live is listed as Top Tier. I decided I'd go with the V-Power 93 instead of the 89. However, the Service Adviser showed me where it says 89 on the gas cap. He said 93 does something but I can't remember exactly the term he used.

So what should I do, go down to 89 or continue using 93? Again, the few cents difference doesn't matter, I'd rather give my MINI whatever keeps him running healthy.

Thoughts?

Regards,
David

PS: When I take turns sometime I notice the little gas lights sorta dim and come back. Kinda gives me the impression it has to do with the gas moving around in the tank? I just had an oil change and a complimentary 45pt inspection, so if anything was wrong maybe they'd know?

If you have the non-turbo version then 89 is ok. Use top tier though.

What he said. No reason to go higher octane if it only calls for 89 minimum, plus it'll save you like...a dollar per fillup. Well, maybe 2 dollars now that gas stations have 20 cent increments per octane.

Regarding that gas tank light issue, it could be that very reason you suggest. As long as those lost kernels come back after the turn you have nothing to worry about :p

OK, thanks for the follow-up guys. I will say the loaner they gave me was an "S" automatic. All I can say is, OMG....OMG...OMG!!! That thing cooks, and I was shocked. I've never ever driven a turbo before and it was amazing.

Thanks again for the posts
David
