Old -new Mini Owner

Not new to Minis-have had a 2005 R50 for about 6 years - but came across this site as I was researching replacing the 5speed with a 6speed getrag - yep- my 5 speed is dying... Found the new trans and am about to start - anyone have any good tips 😉 ?

Welcome to NAM, Stan! There are a few good threads on here about the swap. I listed them below for you. If you need anything or have any questions please don't hesitate to let me know. Post up some pictures of your R50 for us as well when you can.

Welcome,

Its here , its a bit of a job. The getrag 5 speed found on the 05+ is a better transmission then the midlands. Going for the higher gear , so it will not rev high in top gear on 5 speed. Or easily available 6 speed ?

My 5 speed is grinding heavily into 2nd gear, also the gear shift lever moves around a lot when in second - back and forth with throttle on/off. Suspect synchros are gone- but can't explain lever motion- does not exist in other gears. Checked shift cables carefully for binding, etc.

Since parts are not available for the synchros- decided change to a 6 speed was much more exciting than a rebuilt 5 speed- not to mention less expensive ( I do the work 😃 )

Thanks for the info. Sounds like synchros, yea, not to many internal parts available, if any at all for the 5 speed getrag. Midlands you can get allot of things.

Sounds like a swap in order. you will like the higher speed with lower revs. Good luck with the swap, need more new parts let me know.

If it's a project for fun, go for it! If you're really trying to save money, I might reconsider. There's a long list of parts that you'll have to get along with the trans, like axles, cables, hydraulic lines, cylinder, etc.

Not really for fun-but I'm an old retired guy with a lot of time 😀. I know the extent of the new parts needed, and still save money over a rebuilt 5speed. And work isn't that much more- most of those parts are removed/replaced either way....
