Newbie here...06s or 09s?
Hello Mini friends!
I've been wanting a (used) Mini for quite a while and think I've done my homework. Hoping you can give me some advice: I am looking at two Minis, one is an '06 S with 62,000 miles for $7500, the other is an '09 S with 66,000 miles for $8500. Both are 6 speed manual. They have comparable options and both look great. Which would be the best bet, in terms of reliability and longevity?
According to KBB they're both a bit over-priced so I think I'll try to get a lower price. Anyway, any advice you can offer will be most appreciated. I'm so excited to get motoring!
Thank you

Personally, between those two years I'd go with the '06 S as well. I'd check pricing comparison on the one you want with craigs list, truecar.com, cars.com, etc and then that way you have a better idea of what MINI's are going for in your area. KBB gives you a good basis to go with, but pricing on MINI's does vary depending on the area you're located in. Also, before you purchase I'd highly recommend getting a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done by a local MINI indy shop so that way they know what to look for and you know what issues it may have before you purchase it. Good luck and be sure to share with us what you end up picking up.

Having owned an 06 and an 08 (same as 09) I would go with the 2009. Yes, there are some problems, but interior of the R56 is much nicer than the older ones and it is a far more advanced car.
That being said, if you're buying it as a sports/performance car, the R53 is a little better driving (much better steering) and easier to modify.
If you're buying strictly on reliability and longevity, the 06 is better.

Welcome to NAM and the world of MINI Motoring. I would likely go with the '06. Check with truecar to see what comparable models are going for in your geographic area, and have a mechanic familiar with MINIs check it over.
You can also check a number of items yourself, such as:
Chassis site lines for alignment
Air conditioning/heat/fans
Windows/door locks
Pull on wheels vertically and horizontally, check for movement from the control arm bushing or wheel bearing
Tire wear, wheel damage, brake pad wear
Moisture by battery box in trunk
Lights, wipers, buttons and switches, pedal feel, clutch, gearbox feel
Smooth idle, no noise or rattle, reservoir tank line, hose check
Strut tower bulge
No bouncing or chirping from tensioner assembly
No fraying or cracks on serpentine belt
Valve cover gasket and any oil at back of engine
Water thermostat – let engine get hot
Check jack points under car for bending
Check for oil leak behind front bumper at crank position sensor O ring
Oil filter housing
Power steering fan & pump inlet hose
Engine mounts
Listen for clicking sound from drive axles when test driving and turning
Clutch slave cylinder dry, oil filler cap any carbon or sludge?
Brake fluid color
Dipstick breakage
Hope this helps, and let us know which you pick!
