New Memer

Hello Everyone,

My name is Pat from the New York area, looking forward for some guidance from this group.

I have a 2010 Mini S that according to the mechanic needs a new engine, where can I get a used engine and would you advice to do so?

Pat G.

I was thinking the same as ProjectMini. I was thinking "We need pictures" while you are talking "I need a new engine"

Excellent suggestions will follow from members with far more experience than myself. I hope they will include things to try before going the new engine route.

Good luck. You found the right place to get the advice you need to get your MINI back on the road.

If you haven't already, I would suggest a second opinion. A new engine can set you back $5k+.

This is good advice. Any time someone tells you that you need to put that much into it, it never hurts to get more than one opinion. If you are taking it to a shop, be sure they are a place that specializes in BMW/MINI or at least a Euro shop. Also, if you can post what the mechanic said as to the reason why you need the whole motor replaced... what does he say is wrong with it? Good luck and hang in there, you are in the right place.

Hi and welcome to NAM, patg!
on your Mini purchase, I think!
Mini is a funny thing. I have heard the engine is toast many times (I buy and sell Mini Coopers. It can be bad with a ruined head, if the cam chain takes a dive, but quite often, it is not so severe and I have bought many "broken Minis with ugly engine sounds, that may be only cam chain guides, or a bad cam chain tensioner, so don't jump to a conclusion, if you don't know for sure.
There are people that are willing to help you get to the problems!
Have you gotten and OBDII scan on the car yet? What codes does it show?

^ +1 ^ This is a a great point. Listen to what ItsmeWayne has to say. I’ve read many forum posts from him, and I can say this guy knows what he’s talking about.

Welcome. Sorry you have issues already. But I would for sure verify what is wrong with it and decide to fix the engine or replace it.
If you do go with a used engine make sure you put a new timing chain and reseal it before install as it will be much easier and cheaper to do out of the car.
