Moving to San Diego From Canada

Dear All,

I'm Mike from Canada. I got myself a 2005 MINI Cooper this year. I'll be moving to San Diego soon and I really want to bring the MINI with me. Does anyone have an idea if this year and model will be compliant with todays California DMV standards/regulations?

I found a sticker under the hood saying this:
"This vehicle conforms to U.S. EPA interim non tier 2 (BIN9) regulations applicable to gasoline fueled 2005 model year new motor vehicles and to California regulations applicable to 2005 model year new lev passenger cars."
And this:
"MODEL: MINI Cooper, Mini Cooper S, conv
TEST GROUP: 5BMXV01.6R50
EVAPORATIVE EMISSION FAMILY: 5BMXR0093R50
ENGINE DISPLACEMENT: 97.5 cu.in/1598 cu.cm
EXHUAST EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM:
Mini Cooper, Cooper conv: MU-TWC, TWC, H02S(2), SFI
Mini Cooper S, conv: WU_TWC, TWC, H02S(2), SFI, SC, CAC
CERTIFICATION FUEL: CALIFORNIA PHASE II GASOLINE
OBD II CERTIFIED
TUNE UP SPECIFICATIONS:
NO ADJUSTMENT REQUIRED
CATALYST"

I think you'll be ok, but you're going to have to get a smog check and prepare yourself. California DMV fees are stupid

Thanks for the quick reply! Are we talking hundreds or thousands of $ ?

Cheers,
Mike

Welcome to San Diego! If you are coming to get away from the cold, you're coming to the right place! I don't even own a jacket. I only were short sleeve shirts. Yes, California is probably more expensive, but I'm willing to pay the California "tax" for the weather!

I wouldn't worry about the DMV fees...In January my fees were $194. I can't imagine yours would be any more than that.

@Kevdog, yap it is going to be quite a different winter for me, and I'm really looking forward to experiencing it. When you said fees, are you referring to the cost of import or just monthly insurance?

Cheers,
Mike

I was only referring to the annual registration fee. I did find ALL of the information you need on the DMV website. It looks like there's quite a bit of paperwork needed!
