Making Trailer Hitches
The problem with making a MINI trailer hitch and SELLING it is not techinical or fabrication, it is legal. I am not a lawyer, but this is how it was explained to me.
MINI does not rate the car for a trailer hitch in the U.S.A.
You could build a hitch that works fine, and is attatched well to the car, BUT, if some one wrecks the car while towing a trailer, you are in the position of having provided a product that may have "made the car unreasonably dangerous". The next thing you know, the "heirs" own your house, your IRA and half your salary for the rest of your life.
If you have a bussiness with liability insurance, such as a custom hitch or welding shop should, this may be a normal and acceptable risk to you.

Thanks for the link ..... I just took some messurement on my MCS and got all draw up for the hitch, should be an easy one to make.
However !!! Do you know if auto insurance will cover for damage if you got in an acident towing the trailer with a home made custom hitch ??????
Anyhow , I will post up some pictures as soon as I get this project going. Won't be untill maybe 2 months though.

home made trailer hitch
As for insurance on the car and trailer etc. I suggest reading the insurance policy.
I read mine 30 years ago, and at that time, trailers up to a certain size were automatically covered for Liability, and trailers over that size that were typical things you might tow, such as boats or campers were included. It appeared to me they were essentially eliminating big equipment trailers from a normal automobile policy. I don't recall any "hitch" comments.
Some trailer hitches used to carry a statement about meeting the requirements of New York or Colorado.
When I lived in N.Y. I learned that a home owners fire policy would not provide coverage for an electrical fire, unless the work had been done by a licensed electrician, or inspected by the state. Makes you think twice about adding an extra outlet in the house or garage! It also makes me wonder about a trailer hitch that was not approved by that state...
Having said all of that, there are certainly thousands of home made trailers and trailer hitches on our roads.
