MCS That is the easy part MINI Cooper S

a is new a would be for automatic or SMG automatic transmission

A minor correction. While A does stand for Automatic transmission, the MINI does not use an SMG unit, rather an Aisin-AW TF-61SN 6-speed transmission (also found in the Audi TT and other VW products).

Others, above, have explained the acronymous verbiage. So I shall attempt to enlighten with an image. This is an MCSa snapped by an MA (Julie at Classic) on April 11, 2005. Isn't it astounding?! Note the red highlight on the grill which I believe distinguishes the MCSa from others. Not. This special MINI is en route to the SF Bay Area now via transporter. Although I am not self-conscious (which is rare for me) about getting an automatic I'm glad MINI didn't go completely retro by sticking an "automatic" label on the exterior.
