I have the TomTom Go and it rocks !!!
The best piece of electronic equipment that I have bought since my Mac.
Like my MAC it just works and works well. no fuss no bother, nada, just works. It gives turn by turn directions and has never been wrong. In addition it can be updated via the web and you can dowmload maps of foreign countries, which is especially useful if you want to drive in Europe.
The other option I would reccomend is buying a PDA and then the TomTom PDA package with sat receiver. This option would allow you to have a PDA as well as Sat Nav system tied into one pckg.

Hey that’s the picture of my new after market Nav system I got for my Birthday. It's awesome.
I’m using a Garmin Street Pilot III. The 2610 is the newer model. The nav works great and is easy to setup and use. I have mine in a suction cup type mounting bracket stuck to the drivers side windscreen next to the A pillar. It’s very easy to see and you don’t have to take your eyes away from the road view to see and use it. I’ll post a picture of how it’s mounted after I get home if I can remember.
MINIclo uses the 2610 and we did a side by side comparison as we drove up to the Dragon together in May. They both plotted the same route and all the speed, Nav and other functions were exactly the same. She has hers mounted the same way I do.
Garmin is one of the top names in Nav systems and the 2610 is a great. You’ll be extremely pleased if you get it.

Another vote here for the TomTom Go. I have the 300 model, and it rocks. Check out my Gallery for a pic of it mounted on my windscreen. My only complaint, is that the unit slips out of my hand too easliy , fortunately it's very well built and survived the 3-4 falls from several feet with no damage at all
