Pop!

I JUST BOUGHT A 2005 MCS AND ARE THE SUPPOSED TO MAKE A POPPING SOUND WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATION? THIS WOULD BE FROM 4TH GEAR DOWN. I DON'T RECALL HEARING IT WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR. I TOOK IT THE ESCONDIDO DEALER AND THEY DID NOT EVEN LISTEN TO IT THEY JUST SAID, "IT'S SUPPOSED TO MAKE THAT SOUND IS THIS TRUE?

It's a feature

The dealer is right - it is a feature, added to the latest programming of your onboard chip.

I removed the resonator from my JCW (caps are OK here, right?) exhaust and it seems to pop even more... I find myself lifting off the throttle just to hear it

I love it!!!

But all '05 MCS exhaust do not sound the same. Some have a nice burble pop, others sound like a cheap tin can.

the MCS Manual we test drove had a lot of popping when you let your foot off the throttle. Amazing sound from a factory exhaust!

Our MSCa is nearing 700 miles and in just starting to break in & pop a bit. it was very quiet when we first got it, i hope it continues to "break in"

How does one program a car to make sounds? I doubt there is an MP3 player under the bonnet with a speaker in the exhaust system.

I guess it's been tuned via an engine management program in ECU? I'm sure more knowledgeable members of NAM can enlighten us...

The timing is pulled to about -30 deg on sharp off throttle.

As explained in many of the other threads about this...that would be great in the Newbie FAQ....that still doesn't exist...

Pop discussion

If you haven't checked out the podcasts at whiteroofradio.com, go there and listen to podcast #9. They have a great discussion about this with Randy Webb of Webb Motorsports. he explains how it works.
