Brakes

Have a 2002 Mini S with 35,000 miles. (Out of warranty and 400 miles away from nearest dealer). The right rear brake is dragging. Lots of road noise. Have the tire off and doesn't seem to be releasing after applying brake. Left wheel spins freely when jacked up but not this one. Any ideas???

How bad is the right rear brake dragging? Can you feel deceleration when you let off the throttle? And the road noise you have, are you referring to squealing brakes or something else?

Many years ago, I had a similar problem, not just with one wheel, though. Turned out to be crud in the brake line that would go toward the wheel, but not back, and kept the brake fluid from doing the same. Don't know if this helps......

No squealing. Just the sound when something is holding back, rubbing. We had the tire off last night and looked. Just looks like the pads aren't releasing after stepping on the brake.

A collapsing brake line could probably do this. Would be a good idea to take it somewere for service. A new brake line would require bleeding the brakes, a bound piston in the caliper could require rebuild/replacement . All in all unless you feel comfortable getting into it a good mechanic is the way to go.

Got it fixed! It was a wheel bearing. We have changed tires, checked brakes, nothing worked. But it was a wheel bearing. It is ready to motor again. Pretty great. No more road noise!!! Thanks for input. So if you have some real bad road noise check the wheel bearings!!
