1st post and BIG dogs in MINIs?

First post in 1st gear... I'm driving a bmw 330 right now but the lease is up in February. Since financing is through the same place I really want to get a mini at that time. BUT the big question is do BIG dogs fit in minis? I'm talking Newfoundland size dogs. Can't wait to hear from you all. I think this site is super.

Welcome to NAM!
My Golden weights in at about 105 pounds, so isn't as large your Newfoundlands but he likes it just fine.

If you fold down the rear seats, I couldn't imagine any dog having a hard time in the back.

If you are going for a long ride, I would think that the dog would appreciate some sort of filler for the rear boot... when folded down, the rear seatbacks are elevated above the floor of the boot... maybe some dense foam cut to fit?

You can also probably find other threads on putting in a carpeted plywood filler to make it level with the seats down. And you'll need to post pics with the Newfie Mini

Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome and the feedback! Newfies can be 175# or more (or less) but it looks like they won't have a problem!

Welcome to NAM and Newfies are great. I did see a BIG Landseer take out a Husky at a dog show some years back.

I take my Mastiff mix (about 105 lbs) in mine. She just curls up on the back seat and pushes her nose between the front seats.

I have 2 Great Danes. I guess I need to see if they fit

One is 125#, and the other stands almost 4' tall, and over 150#.
Could be interesting.

No problem, our 11 pound minature dachshund fits just fine - you should have plenty of room!

I have a 95 lb Bernese Mountain Dog and she fits, well it helps if she lays down. I leave the seats down with a blanket over the back to help contain the dog gunge. It took her a few tries to learn to jump in and turn around so her tail is all the way in. Now I just tell her "Get your tail in" and she figures it out. It even works if I need to transport one of my son's friends with us also, they had better just really love dogs.

Now just imagine 14 of your Doxies in the back at the same time... that's about the same as one Nufie!

With the back seats down, and the floor made level we have taken our 220 lb great dane to the vet a couple of times. He curles up just fine, but I don't think I would want to do a long trip with him (he slobbers)

Great Dane

Hi Kodiak,
I just got my mini last week, and I have a great dane and a boxer. Both fit inside without any problem, and without putting the rear seats down. The great dane loves to put her head through the sunroof.

Nelson, my Bullmastif (155 pounder) fits comfartably in the back with the seats folded dowm. I do wish I had gotten a rear bumber protector, he has nicked the paint slightly. Other than that its a good fit.

My 80# Lab has plenty of room with the back seat down. I bought a foam doggie mattress from the Pet store that fits perfectly over the prone seat backs. He still wants to sit in my lap though ..

Glad to hear that a great dane fits as that is my next must-have thing. Want to move out of an apartment first though.

Get a convertible. My big American Bulldog, almost Newfoundland size sits in the backseat with his doggles on and loves it.

Dogs love small spaces. That said, there's plenty of room in the back (seats down) for even a large dog. Dogs shouldn't be standing in cars when they are moving, anyway.
