Any CVT Issues?
Hi,
Have been lurking for about a year and decided to join! Just traded my beloved 03' Chili Red stick for a '02 Silk Green auto for my 16 year old daughter (gives me an excuse to get myself a new one!). Anyone have any issues with the CVTs? Autos are against my religon but she was unsure about starting out with a stick as a new driver but had to have a mini!
Hope to be active in DC Metro group with my daughter, met some really nice people down at Kings Dominion at the Mini Takes the States stop last summer!

Like charley, we have two MCs with CVT and no indication of any problems thus far. Of course, we only have a combined 20K miles on the two of them.
I used to be like you... wouldn't have been caught dead in a car with auto tranny. Technology, like the CVT, has made automatics more like driving and less like riding though. Besides, bad knees make it tough to use the clutch in city driving.

Welcome to NAM! I also have a Silk Green MC CVT, so it's always a pleasure to see a friendly face, albeit a new one, in a very rare-colored MINI. I also have a new MCSa. I'm like a lot of drivers here, having always driven stick shifts in the past. However, as was previously stated, the CVT technology, as well as that of the automatic in the MCS, have really garnered a niche for MINI drivers to rest their left foot as they grow older. That said, the automatics/triptonics are also nice for new drivers who don't have much experience with driving a stick, and/or those really don't want to take the time to learn.
Having said all that, however, the CVT HAS had some issues, and that is greatly addressed in the thread provided by ChrisW. I bought MY CVT in late March of '04, used, and with only 2200 miles on it. It now has 32,000 miles on it and they have been safe, economical and wildly fun miles. So, I think your CVT's "issues" depends on the care you take with your car...or, just having bad luck, and no one can forecast that happening.

Since there are not too many silk green MCs around, I think the first owner was a member of the DC club, because I remember seeing him at the Dragon last May with a new MINI and asked what had happened to his silkie. If that is the case, he took very good care of his car before handing it over to HIS daughter.

Thanks for the input and directing me to the other CVT posts. I decided to buy a newer Mini (than '02) with fewer miles and in the process of shopping for my daughter found another Mini for myself, an slightly used '06 Astro Black MCS! But am still looking for an auto for her (in between drives!)
