Howdy from Illinois

Hello there! I've discovered this website by accident during the past couple of weeks. I don't have a Mini yet but I hope to be a proud daddy soon
This site is great for info on the Minis and I need as much as that as I can get.

First of all, I'm a 28 yr-old guy living in Illinois. There are plenty of Minis running around here. I see about 4-5 daily as I drive to and from work.

I need to buy a new car in a few months and initially the Mini wasn't an option due to the rather high price. However, the more I read about it, the more I fell in love with it, to the point where I'm thinking about it night and day. (Now the only hurdle left is to convince the wife )

I want a Cooper S with the manual tranny. I've played around with the configurator and I believe I've reached the "optimum" configuration, which is:
-mellow yellow color with white roof and mirrors (I chose this color because it's free and I don't want to spend extra on paint; besides I rather like the shade in the configurator; only hope the actual one looks as good)
-sports package: DSV, Xenon, stripes, 17" rims
-LSD
-center armrest
-white-toned interior

All these amount to around $24,000 MSRP.

Well, that's about it for my introduction. It's nice to be here and I promise I'll soon pester you with lots of questions

Welcome to NAM and good luck convincing the wife. I am sure that will not be that difficult. Just search for any concerns that might come up I am sure they have been covered here more then once.
Nice sounding MINI keep us in the loop on the progress of getting your dream car.

Welcome !!

Funny, that's how I discovered this website back in August... now look at where I am (see the post count).

Your life will never be the same.

Good luck on that MINI. I'm very fond of the MY/W combo.

Welcome,

Not sure what part of our great State you're at. If you're up near the Chicagoland area. Check out the local club.

Welcome to NAM from up nort!

Now that you have the "thoughts" go take a test drive and get the "desire". Trust me... the test drive seals the deal!

And think about joining up with Chicago mini Club, every now and then we (Milwaukee minis) join up with them for some fun times!

Well guys, I'm really afraid of that ride
I know I'm gonna get hooked.

My wife doesn't like its very small size. Of course, she has kids in mind and all that. No kids yet, so I figure, why not go for it?

We test drove a mellow yellow and it looked great. Our youngest kid loved it. We order Dark Silver, but I think you'll love MY. We have 2 kids in car seats and they fit in the back. But we do have a bigger car for really getting around. Good luck!

Well, the reasons I chose Mellow Yellow are:
- I needed to price the car very carefully, to keep the price at around $24,000, hence I didn't want to spend extra on paint
- yellow is an old dream of mine; for some reason I wished for a straw yellow Porsche. Mellow Yellow comes close to that.
- I also preferred a light color because my wife drives a Dark Cherry Black Scion tC and it heats up like crazy in summertime
- I skipped Pepper White because I wanted a contrasting roof

Thus, I arrived at Mellow Yellow with white roof and white stripes on the bonnet

Hi miniscoop.

I know your pain! My wife finally agreed to let me buy a Mini last fall...on one condition, we pay off the Honda first...I agreed to that. I have about 10 more months...I'm going to wait until the '08's...I think!

Good news is I seemed to have convinced the wife. bad news is, too many options that I would like to have bring the price up. My wife thought it would be nice to also have heated seats and maybe heated mirrors. I also thought it might be useful to have the rear foglights, for improved visibility. Aaaaah! The madness had begun!

Heated seats are good especially if you have leather seats IMHO... rear fogs are ok too (once again, my opinion)... but you could just get the extra brake lite from MyMini which works real nice.. not sure if it works for '07 though...

Good luck

I'm not gonna go for the leather seats. It's way over budget. Leatherette feels fine as it is and I think it's better than cloth.

I will tell you a couple things other people told me when I was speccing out my MCS, and they might save you a bit of money.

Reconsider the sports package.

The 17" rims weigh a significant amount more than the 16's. If you like the look, go for it, but performance wise the 16's are much better. Ride will probably be a little bit better too.

The DSC, while it may be a good safety feature, pretty much gets the rep like, if you drive properly you don't need it or won't want it on. A lot of people switch it off when they drive fast, or have it permanently disabled. People have found it a little bit bothersome in how it cuts power perhaps a little too much. Then again, it could save your life, too.

The stripes and Xenon's are personal preference, a lot of people love both. You can get these a la carte, for less than the package, assuming you don't want the other two things. Your call.

Consider whether you want the anthracite roof. A lot of people who didn't get it wish they did, even at $200. It does look very nice. Foglights are much easier to have done at purchase than retrofit (although i think the rear isn't so bad).

Keep in mind, you're gonna want to buy mods. And accessories. How soon and how often are gonna be budget dependant. Put aside some money for go fast stuff!

Welcome to our world!

Hey muggy thanks for the advice!
You got a few good points there.
Thing is... I don't necessarily need the 17" rims. I think DSC should be worth it's money though, in those few situations where it's actually needed. Like on snow and other slippery surfaces. And I could easily turn it off otherwise.

I'm not into modding, that's why I chose these packages. I wouldn't know where to start with modding and besides I wouldn't have any spare cash for that. Nah... it's all stock for me

I see you didn't mention the LSD. I'm gonna get that no matter what.

I think Xenons should be useful on a daily basis. More visibility is always a good thing.

Foglights... they come in the package so that's fine. Besides, I want foglights.

I don't want the anthracite roof, but I am considering the white toning on the doors and dash, to go with the white roof and mirrors. Is it worth $200? I don't know, probably not, but the interior will be that much nicer and also its resale value will be slightly higher.

miniscoop,

I don't mod mine much either,

1. Not many available for an R56
2. Expensive
3.Not really neccesary

The white looks great in a car with a white roof. However is likely to detract from desirability as people worry about it getting marked / dirty.

The only mods I have done so far are to change the orange indicator (turn signal) bulbs fto silvered and the same for the sidelighes. I have also changed the front side marker light bulbs to ones that are whiter to complement the Xenons, total cost about £20 ($35).
