R60 Real World Fuel Consumption / MPG
#151
Drove from Boston to Florida and back. Did over 3200 miles total. Reset everything before I left and averaged 28.4 MPG for the whole trip. Average speed was around 65 on the GPS and onboard computer. LOTS of states it was closer to 80.
AC was on 90% of the time.
One thing I did notice is there was a difference between my speed and the GPS and the GPS speed on my phone where as the Mini was off by -3MPH

Wow, I have my AC off 70% of the time, and I still get only 26 mpg. I'll check my tire pressure, but I can't think of anything else.

I have automatic in this CM. I used to have 2010 MCS, and my manual convert was getting very good mpg comparing to my 2010 MCS hardtop auto, about 10% more!

I'm surprise with 26 mpg b/c my station wagon gets the same mpg with much bigger engine and all wheel drive on freeway. I was hoping to get over 30.

Anyway, 24.5 mpg is quite depressing. I really hope my mpg will improve and get close to what sticker suggested b/c I got it for commuting purpose. It isn't the best car for commuting but it is the best compromise between commuting, handling, and practicality from my experience.

A lot of it comes down to how you drive. I get about 24.5 MPG on average with mixed city/hwy driving in my JCW 6MT. If I actually try to get good gas mileage I can do closer to 28 or so city, but that requires shifting at just over 2k rpm and staying out of the fun pedal.
I easily do 30+ on the highway cruising at about 70, as long as I don't have to change speed much.

I also suggest keeping the tires at the 'high speed' setting (38 PSI) or higher.

Thanks for your input, 24.5 MPG is a respectable number for a very tossable 200+ hp crossover. I just did another commute last evening for roughly 390 miles. The best highway efficiency for my CM is at about 68 MPH or 66 MPH on GPS. I can get roughly 28-29 MPG. MPG starts dropping sharply once I pass 70 MPH. I think my CM engine has to work too hard to keep it at 70 MPH since it doesn't have any force induction system to help with torque with torque converter robbing efficiency along the drivetrain.
Anyway, I love it just not getting the MPG I was aiming for. After all, I got CM because I am not ready to trade my soul for MPG and CVT transmission, and gas has been slightly less expensive these days.

The car needs some break-in miles before it will get it's best fuel efficiency. At 11K miles I have no trouble getting the EPA highway rating (31) on my ALL4 manual if I keep cruising speed to about 65 MPH. The CM has fairly high aero drag so if you cruise at too high a speed that will drag down the mileage.
I also suggest keeping the tires at the 'high speed' setting (38 PSI) or higher.

I do appreciate everyone who has contributed to the thread, but the reports make me sad. I'd love to have a Countryman, and found a 2012 CTM-S with only 15K miles on a local lot. But for my 74 mile round-trip commute, if you add up sub-30 MPG and .8 gallons less fuel capacity, I'm filling up a lot more often, and if I go with an S, a fair bite more expensively (premium vs mid-grade) compared to my Clubman.
I guess paid for is good, eh?

I just read that the new F56 Mini will have a Cd of .28 - very impressive. The F56's should be amazing in highway FE.

Yes, the Countryman does have more mass to accelerate. Also aero drag is the product of Cd and frontal area, and the frontal area of the Countryman is higher than any other Mini by far.
