What is this on my bumper?

Hello everyone - have any of you encountered this on your MINI Countryman car paint?

This appeared mysteriously over the weekend and I am trying to find out what actually caused it. It looks like the paint has wrinkled up - but what causes it? A burn?

The size of this spot is smaller than a 1 cent coin and it is on my rear bumper.

Can this be fixed?

Your comments are appreciated.

Matt

Looks like it got real hot and melted. Something may have reflected sunlight on it. It would have to be something that focused the light at just the right angle though...

Have your bumper been repainted before, if not, it looks like paint defect from the factory.

Assuming that's on the plastic parts, I'd guess a cigarette held to close or a solvent spill personally.

Wow, that looks really gnarly. I second the paint rework call. You could just get the rear bumper pad and hide it.

I was thinking along the lines of HateRegs...a cigarette butt maybe? I had somebody use my rear bumper to tie their shoes once. It's amazing to me the thoughtlessness of some people.

Thank you all for your replies.

ShipM8 & HateRegs - a cigarette butt was my first assumption too. But the way the paint has melted would require a very high heat source - I wonder if a cigarette butt is capable of such damage. But I am no expert when it comes to car paints....

What's heartbreaking is that my MINI Countryman is only 4 months old.

I am sending it to the body shop tomorrow to get my bumper fixed and hopefully he can shed some light as to what actually happened. Bumpers, I am told, are not covered by MINI Ding & Dent coverage. :-(

Could be a Cig but what are the odds of someone flinging one and it landing and staying on the bumper??? Anything is possible I guess. I was thinking some kind of chemical splashed on it but would have thought that that wouldn't be the only spot. Maybe a greasy finger print before paint and the heat helped release it and caused the wrinkle..

+1 on the hot ash from cig. Is it on the rear top bumper, is so then could have landed.

If you have a low or no deductible under comprehensive coverage (insurance) it might be worth submitting to your insurance company. It's obviously not collision damage and your having a comprehensive claim on your record should have no impact on your rates going up. Double check with your agent.

Solution found!

I decided to get the Rear Bumper guard to cover up the spot on my back bumper. Problem solved.

The bumper guard fits perfectly and I am happy with how it looks!

Nice and I like how you're photo-bombing your own picture.
