Countryman audio upgraded
Hello
I have a 2013 all4 without HK system. And I Would like to upgraded the quality and power of the factory sound system, without affecting the look and warranty of the mini.
I was in a shop today and they gave me a quote (a little high for my budget). But what do you think? I just want it to expend no more than 500 for all the upgraded, any suggestions?

Lots of people (myself included) have upgraded the speakers only to the non-HK package. It keeps the car looking stock and doesn't affect any cabling. Check out the thread on Focal speakers.
Its not a huge improvement (you wont get that unless you add an amp), but if you are worried about not changing too much, that might be a route that you choose to go.

definitely not as complicated as installing an amp and swapping out the under seat speakers. Changing door speakers is a relatively easy job..you should be able to find plenty of installers to do it for you around there. Easy for them.

I just realized that the quote was from "Sounds Good Stereo" and $1400 for 2 sets (I hope they are sets) of main speakers seems awfully high. A lot of the difference in sound between $1400 worth of mains and $400 worth of mains will be lost in road/engine/tire noise, so don't pay for it!
I worked in car audio for a while, competed in Auto Sound Quality Competitions sanctioned by IASCA and have installed systems.
I am in South Florida and I think the shop either has started at the highest priced products and figured they could always come down. Factory sound is typically a compromise between manufacturing and cost concerns (even premium systems) and almost any car can have the sound upgraded " a whole bunch" for $1500. It isn't rocket science and there are "metro" kits for installation and connection. I think the labor quote is reasonable. Knowing how to remove panels and such is the biggest thing as not to break off tabs and such, but you don't need $1400 worth of speakers in an auto for good sound. Especially in an auto that has as much road noise as the MINI's. $200 a pair for mid-highs would buy you a big step up. The subs/amps part of the quote is also the hard to install part and doesn't seem as far off reality in price, though it better be really good work. Get another quote, and not from the dealer. Good luck!
