Electrical MCS under dash fuse box diagram and wiring
#1
Ok, here is the companion thread to the otehr one I created earlier.
There have been several threads about fuse boxes and wiring diagrams, but we are no closer to having a usable listing of fuses and the circuits they protect.
With these two threads, I am attempting to collect this information with the help of all the knowledge here on MCO. I am doing this separately for the engine bay fuse box and the internal fuse box located under the dash, for the 03 MCS, since that is what I have and can investigate. If someone else would like to do the same for the MC, or other years of production (02,04), that would be great.
Here is how I'm hoping we can work this out. In the picture and diagram below the components in the boxes are labeled / numbered. Anyone can then respond to the post and state: F1 is the fuse for circuit XYZ, R1 is the relay for ABC...
Please state very clearly in your reply whether you are certain about the information you are posting (preferably tested in some way), or whether you are merely guessing or passing on infromation you have heard or read somewhere else.
I am hoping that this way we can compile all the necessary information. If enough input comes in, then I will compile all that and summarize it in a post at the end of this thread.
For reference here is a link to the thread about the MCS engine bay fuse box
Below is a picture for the under the dash (side of driver footwell, under a plastic cover) fuse box, this picture shows the diagram from the plastic fuse box cover:
Sorry about the large image size, but I wanted to make sure all can recognize the pictograms.
In my car (Dec 02 build date 03 MCS with these options: cold package, premium, sports minus MINIlites, HK, auto dim mirror and rain sense wipers), all postions that have a pictogram next to them are occupied, except two of the four Relay positions to the right (the four large Boxes on the right). The one with hand pointing to manual (top relay of the 4), and the one with +/- (second relay from bottom) are empty.
All of the following are my initiall unverified guesses based on the pictograms:
F1: drivers side window motor
(if true this means they ARE separately fused, as opposed to what the dealer and ask-MINI told me!!!)
F2: DSC
F3: clock
F4: no idea
F5: instrument cluster, but all on one, or separately????
F6: no idea
F7: no idea
F8: no idea
F9: more instrument cluster stuff, but don't know
F10: stereo
F11: no idea
F12: heated seats
F13: don't know
F14: interior dome lights?
F15: sunroof power opening / closing?
F16: rear window defrost?
F17: one of the wipers: maybe rear? Note there are 2 fuses with a wiper pictogram (but a different one) under the bonnet!
F18: airbag or other crash protection related electronics
F19: passenger side window motor
F20: don't know
F21: more instrument cluster stuff?
F22: no idea
F23: windshield wash?
F24: car alarm?
F25: headlight power wash
F26: no idea
F27: stereo, another fuse. Maybe one for head unit, other for trunk gear such as CD changer and/or HK amp?
F28: horn
F29: some AC fuse? Note other AC fuse(s) in engine bay fuse box!
F30: more instrument cluster stuff?
F31: no idea
F32: beats me
F33: DSC, ABS, etcc...
F34: no idea
F35: clueless
F36: no idea
F37: maybe remote lock or power lock?
F38: position empty in my car
F39: don't know
F40: don't know
F41: Park distance warning?
F42: position empty in my car
R1 (top relay, the hand to book pic): empty in my car
R2 (2nd from top): power wash relay?
R3: empty in my car
R4: (gas pump pic) no idea.
Ok, that's it!
ANy help figuring this out will be greatly appreciated!

Ok...my best guesses on the ones you weren't sure about (most of them at least)
4, 7, 11, 22, 26, 36, 40, R1 (the book & hand) - I can only guess..maybe the gauge lights?
5, 31, 30. Gauges. Probably 1 for speedo and tacho, 1 for small gauges (fuel oil etc) and 1 for the idiot lights.
6. Front fog lights (or possibly factory driving lights)
8. No idea.
13. Rear fogs.
14. Dome light.
15. Sunroof.
16. Rear defrost.
17. Rear wiper.
23. Windshield washer.
24. Alarm
29. AC
31. On/off (power when in the key is in the "on" position)
32. Lighter
34. Starter.
35. Mirror control (power moving)
37. Power locks.
39. Main power.
41. Parking control
R2. Headlight washers & wipers.
R4. Probably either the fuel pump or the low fuel sensor. Pump is more likely.
I've owned a number of English cars and am somewhat used to interpreting the icons.

Fuse F8 could be power to the BC1 body computer.
I don't think F6 is fog lights. Engine Bay F10 and R6 have the downward lines I'd associate with fog lights. Also I don't think 5 amps is enough to power them. Could be hazard/turn signal lights.
F29 may be for automatic A/C. Notice again it is only 5 amps, not enough for the motor.
According to this thread on MINI2 Fuse thread F31 is the rear power outlet fuse and F32 is cigarette lighter. I would assume that the third relay down with the matching symbol is also for the rear power outlet and switches power to it.
F34 is marked with the same symbol as 5 fuses in the engine compartment. I'd class it as engine related but not starter.
F35 is claimed to be the heated mirror/washer fuse here: Heated Mirror thread
F39 Not sure. Something low power though.
R4 is a relay, definately fuel pump. The engine compartment listing does not show one. Should match up with F20.
I have read that the book/hand symbol is the equivalent of "consult your shop manual" which I interpret as meaning that those fuses are used for different functions in each market. Or they couldn't come up with a symbol.

Spent some time rummaging around and came up with the following:
MG-BGT your diagram is for a MINI with the boot power outlet. My Aug '03 MCS has the following differences:
- F16 30A Blank
- F31 30A Fan blade
- F41 5A P)))^ and a steering wheel
- Relay #3 Fan Blade.
Apparently the radiator fan needed a relay controlled power source so it moved from FL11 to FL9 bumping the AC fan inside to F31/R3 which left the boot outlet with nowhere to go. I didn't have access to '04 diagrams to see how they powered the new outlet.
Here is a list compilied from official MINI wiring diagrams:

I needed to check out my 2003 Cooper, build date Nov 2002, for a Turn Signal Relay.
Were better than NAM to find the answer.
Unfortunatly it was not here. However, this is what I have found and I use Markus's Picture and numbering sequence.
R1 empty
R2 empty (no power washer)
R3 a Relay Tyco V23134-K59-X312 BMW 6136-8373700 (++0242)
R4 a Relay SAME as above (++0241)
I assumed that R3 was the Turn Signal Relay. But, why didn't Marcus have a relay in R3? Where is the Turn Signal Relay? Why were R3 & R4 the same if R4 was for the fuel pump? I swapped R3 & R4 with no apparent change in the functioning of the Turn Signals. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Sean,
Thanks much for the reply and your ideas.
My R3 symbol is just as shown at the begining of this thread by MG-BGT, no fan blade and I do not have a rear power outlet. MG-BGT had a companion thread for the engine bay fuse holder and I match that also with what looks like relays for the A/C and two fans (probably engine and power steering fans).
I assume the BC that you make reference to is the ECU. I know there are cars that have that tecnology but BMW does not seem to use it. Do you have "knowledge" of MINI using it? I don't dispute that they could be using it, I would just be suprised.
Edited 5/29/04: I have done the homework that I probably should have done first and now believe that the BC1 does in fact control the Turn Signals. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a BC1. This is the "black box" that contains the programable features of the car - which needed to be reprogramed to activate fog lihghts in the US. Thanks Sean for pointing me in the right direction, now to see what I can do with the new found knowledge.
Thanks again for the ideas, yours are better than what anyone else has submited.

Sean,
Thanks much for the reply and your ideas.
I don't dispute that they could be using it, I would just be suprised.

where exactly is this fuse? i didn't see it in the box next to the stock air filter housing. i think this is the one to pull if i want to try a non assisted steering experiment.
i have a first week 2002 mcs that still has the ps pump fan on the same fuse as the radiator fan.
thanks,
