The classic mini's had the starter button on the floor between the seats. You'd turn the key then hold the starter button down to crank the engine. When she fired you'd release the button, find a gear and scoot. Finding a gear was the hardest part with the "wonder" wand shifter. You'd always wonder what gear, if any, you found!

Anyone think this would work as a start button?:

It's a lot cheaper than the ~$60 ones from Moss.

Lots of aftermarket start button installs rely on the start button from the Honda S2000. You might want to check that out too.
I had a 1967 Volkswagen that had a bad ignition, so we just installed a starter button up under the dashboard. You needed to turn the key to the run position. I credit the hidden starter button with preventing the car from being stolen after it was broken into (a different car in the lot got stolen that night!).

i test drove a prius for my wife a few weeks ago and you did not have to have the key in the ignition - just within the car (it was kind of hard to understand the dealer's accent but i think this is what he said). Just a button on the dash to turn it on and off.
I felt like i was turning on my tv or something like that - i would rather turn the key (especially if you have to have the key in the ignition with this one).
