What to do...

All -

First, thank you as these forums lead me to my beloved 2011 Mini S. I have owned it for about two years and have loved every second of it.

A month ago I was cruising down the highway and all of a sudden it started to overheat. I started to lose power as I pulled off the side of the road. Got to the intersection and it died and would not start back up. I opened the hood and saw the coolant was empty. This was odd as I had filled it about 2.5 weeks earlier. Filled coolant and it then would barely turnover. So I got a new battery and then it started to turn but wouldn't catch. At that point I checked the oil just out of curiosity as I had had an oil change maybe less than a year ago and probably have not driven 1500 miles and it was bone dry. Put oil in and it still would not turnover.

Obviously, I had some issues I was not aware of.

Got it towed to a local import specialist (no Mini dealer within 100 miles) and they gave me the following assessment:

Their quote for a new used motor and installation:

At this point I am curious what I should do here. If I dont repair it - can I get anything for the car? It is in excellent shape otherwise.

Car is currently in sw Michigan but I live in Chicago. Any places you would suggest to try to get a quote from to see if I can find anything lower?

Thanks!

Holy crap! I would think you could build a pretty good engine from your core for much less than that. How are your wrenching skills?

As for what you should do, only you can answer that question. What condition is the rest of the car? How sentimental is it t you? There are a lot of long term maintenance repairs you can do pretty easily once the engine is removed. You could add some performance goodies for not much extra investment, too. Do it all right, and the car should last many more years to come.

In its current state, without knowing overall condition, I don't expect you'll get more than a couple thousand for it.

Thanks for the response!

I am not that savvy on vehicles and unfortunately have been super swamped with work the past couple of months and wont be able to make the time.

How do i even sell it in its current state if I wanted to do that? Craigslist? Ebay?
