Yes it depends on the brand - some use green, red and white, others blue, yellow and... well, you get the point.
Tachometers usually connect to the battery (I use a switched source from the fuse box - fuse #1 or #3) and the ground wire on the coil. Some are illuminated and have a separate ground for the little light bulb that makes it glow. The new tach will have wiring instructions, and re-running all the leads will insure that all your wires are clean and free of fraying or bare spots - always best for safety.
