cylinder head

i have heard that you can take a honda 1.6 Ls and take the head off and put the vtec head on it so with that in mind can you take a 1000cc motor head off and put a 1275cc head on it?just curious

Yes, but the block may need pocketed to allow valves to clear. That is not always the case as it depends on head, block, cam, etc...see the tech sections at Minimania. Keith Calver has done a conversion without pocketing so check out his articles & website.

South African Minis had 1098 motors (basically a long stroke 998) with 1275 (12G940) heads, btw...

Here's a couple of pictures of an 1100cc mini motor I took apart a few years ago. You can see the pocketing I did in the block when I ran a 12G940 head on it.

forgive my ignorance, what do you get with a 1275 head on a 998 engine?

I think the 1275 head will allow larger valves than the 998 head. Bottom line, it should breathe better than the stock head. I don't know how a modified 998 head might compare to a stock 1275 head. obviously more expensive but flow....?

bigger valves, bigger & better flowing chambers - you'll need to improve intake & exhaust to make use of it.....

The above motor was built in 1980 from parts I had laying around. 1100cc block punched out .060 over with stock Cooper S cam and a fully ported/big valve 295 head. By 1990 after many hard miles including autocrossing the guides went away and since I had a 12G940 head on the shelf that was ready to go, I decided to try it. Still have to use the big block head gaskets on this setup. There was a subtle difference with this head, but with a different cam and carburation I think it could really make a difference.
