Fuel Gauge Not Working

The fuel gauge on my 75/93 Mini Sprite isn't working. Can anyone tell me how I can check it to see what the problem might be?
thanks

It's either the sender or the guage....

You can try shorting the sender wire to ground and see if the guage moves. If it does, then the sender is shot. If it doesn't, then it probably the gauge.

Oh yeah, disconnect the sender wire as well. You should get a full swing of the guage from open to shorted to ground.

Matt (at least that's what happens on my Mustang....)

I would check the fuse and power to the unit first. Then try the ideas suggested above... Hope this helps... Good Luck

Forgive me for post-jacking, but can the fuel gauge be calibrated? mine show's full until it's about 4 gallons then quickly goes to empty and there's 1.5 gallons left.

New car or old...

New I don't think so, old all work on a variable resetor in the sender unit. You can play with other resistors, or just bend the arm on the sender to get other effects. There's a company in OR or WA that makes capacitive units. They can make them so that empty corresponds to one resistance, and full another, and you can get anything you want.

For the new cars, I have no clue!

Matt
