Tagged!! How to remove permanent marker from paint?

I walked out to my car tonight and found that the driver's side door had been "tagged" with some graffitti!! It's black and does not appear to be raised above the surface of the paint. I rubbed it with my fingers and nothing lifted off or smudged, so I'm assuming it's permanent marker.

Any tips for removing this? Didn't want to go at it with any solvents (e.g. acetone) that might melt the clear coat.

Thanks in advance!

That's too bad.... I'd be pissed if I were you. Anyway, if you suspect it's permanent marker, try marking over a spot w/ a dry erase marker. dry erase markers are sometimes used to remove permanent marker if they're accidentally used on dry erase boards, etc. If by chance it works, maybe you can use a paint cleaner to remove any residual left over?? Good luck.

Try washing it with Dawn. If that doesn't work try the clay bar routine.
Good luck

Dry erase works on permanent markers, because they have alchohol. Something that would work even better is a alchohol napkin, like you would get after eating bbq.

any good cleaner wax should remove it, best results if the surface had been previously waxed. If cleaner wax doesnt do it a mild polish will take it off. Same with spray paint it it were ever tho happen again.

One other thing you can try that is very effective on many things like marker, sap, some glue is rubbing alcohol ( 70% isopropl )

Good luck, I hope it comes off without too much trouble.

Be sure to wax after you get it off.

The folks that suggested isopropol alcohol (rubbing alcohol) are on the right track. It's paint and clearcoat safe and leaves no residue. Rewax afterwards. It's a standard detailers regime.

Isn't it a bummer that you just can't have nice things sometimes!

Get Goof off. it'll remove anything but it also removes the wax on your car. So use Goof off and then get a car wash (or wax it). Let us know how it goes.

My Girlfriend ran over a paint can.... That is bad!!!!!! It exploded, and had white paint all over her Black Car...

We ended up removing it with automotive paint thinner, but it left some swirl marks on the finish... but that is better then the white and black look....

Good luck getting it off..

Rubbing alcohol worked great to remove the marker. Finish looks fine. Thanks again!

I wouldn't use Acetone or paint thinner, it will dissolve the clear coat

Try the alcohol swab. I constantly have to do this to remove ink from My company PDA screen.
