Thin strands of chewing gum on paint surface

I discovered that I have strands of chewing gum on the paint surface of my Mini. I had this experience before and tried to rub them off but they tend to spread out on the paint. Someone suggested that I let the strands of gum dried and they can be peeled right off. Is this a good idea or anyone has other better suggestions? :impatient

That's the way you get it out of hair... Just hold an ice-cube on the gum for 30 seconds or so and pry under it GENTLY with your fingernail.

I'd also think of trying goo-gone or WD40, but the ice idea would be my first stop.

goo-gone maybe. WD40 is actually a water displacer, not sure it will work on gum. Someone on another board with gum in the keyhole said to use "dust-off" compressed air which comes out freezing.

Thanks for the suggestions...will try Dust-off first. But I think when I finally get a chance to work on them tonite, they may have dried.

I'd worry about the propellants in the Dust-off... The ice would definately be safer!

Well, I had a number of these gum strands on my car so I tried to get it off as below:

1. Waited 24 hrs (hope it will dry) and supposed to fall off when I rub on it. Well that did not work. It smeared.

2. Put ice over it. Did not work either...smeared.

3. Aim Dust Off at it. No luck either...smeared.

4. So now I have three large spots on my car with smeared gum residue.

5. I was frustrated and rushed to grab my Z-8 and microfiber towel. Soaked the towel with Z-8 and rubbed onto the smears, then buffed with clear towel. They came right off!

Lighter fluid or mineral spirits on a rag will disolve gum w/o damaging paint, but will remove wax.

Hate to dig up something this old, but I couldn't find much info on the subject. I've got chewing gum on the side of the red mini (on the paint). Anybody have any suggestions on getting it off? (I don't know what the Z-8 product is.) Much Thanks!

I have used "Kit" Scratch Out by Johnson Wax. It's in a yellow bottle and you can buy it at any auto parts store, Wal Mart, or Target. It's not very expensive and does a great job on surface scratches too. Good Luck.

OK, I had some Goo Gone on hand so I tried it. Used a soft microfiber towel and it worked fine. One thing I noticed though is on one spot near the black plastic fender flair, I barely got against the plastic and black stuff came off onto the towel. It didn't seem to leave a bad looking place on the plastic, but I would be leery with using it on any of the black plastic.

I parallel park Max on the street outside where I live, and one morning someone spat their gum out the window while driving by and it hit him squarely on the boundary between the bottom of the window glass and the top of the door metal. I took a wild guess and grabbed WD40 and some paper towels and went to work- took it off in like 30 seconds. I brought a can of Oops! and some Goo Gone out as well, but didn't even need them.

plastic razor blades are good to have around. i use it in conjunction with WD40 to remove gummy crap like bee/insect crap dots.

then i do a quick polish and spot wax the area with Hydro.
