>>Honestly, besides a hot car, what difference does it make if you wash your car in the shade or sun? I've always washed my car in the sun and it's 5 years old and looks great. What kind of damage can it do besides water spots?

Precisely!

In addition to waterspotting, washing a hot paint can cause tjhe car soap solution to dry on the glass and paint, leaving streaks and stains which can be difficult to remove.

Washing on cool paint is the only way to go.

I agree - definetely wash later in the day...I usually wash my MINI right before the sun goes down as it is cooling down outside. Sure it takes a bit more to dry the car, but it looks a ton better. In the hot sun you waste alot more water as you are constently trying to keep up with the sun drying everything on the car. If you have to wash in the middle of the day, do small parts at a time...spray the whole car with water, then soap up a small section, rinse it throughly, and move on....giving one last good rinse at the end...this won't prevent the water spots, but will prevent the soap from drying on the car. Use a little Zaino z6 or your favorite quick detailer spray after you dry your car and it will remove all the water spots.

If you wash it in the shade there's not a mad rush to hurry up before it spots. Then drive it up the street or around the block to get most of the water off and it only takes 10 minutes to dry it (I timed myself). Just be sure to clean off the fresh brake dust on the wet wheels afterwards. I find this much easier and less time-consuming than washing it then drying it in the same spot.

Especially with darker colors you have to wash the car in the morning when the sun is first coming out or when the sun is just about to go down. Thats when i love to wash my car.

I try to wash mine first thing in the morning (6ish) before it get hot or late just before it gets dark. Either way, I dry it in the garage. Just before dark is best if I'm not driving it that nite 'cause it lets the water missed in the nooks and cranies evaporate instead of showing up while I'm driving. We all know the person who puts the window down right after being washed thus leaving streaks on it  That's what I try to avoid.
