In fact, on ALTA's site, they don't even offer the header without a cat! They advertise it as "replacement cat" that just happens to be attached to a header- http://www.altaminiperformance.com/p...alyst-w-Header
In fact, they even go so far as to point out that it's illegal to remove a functional catalytic converter, even to replace it with their cat.

Cody man don't let peer pressure effect your decisions. Plant a couple trees in your back yard and continue running with no cat! Mother nature will understand.

So here's the deal, at least for me...

I don't run a CAT simply because of a few things.

1. The header was a ***** to install, so why in the world would I go through that again...
2. I would have to pay someone to re-install it...
3. I would have to pay someone to cut the CAT off and weld it to the ALTA Header
4. I already have fitment issues with the ALTA (sits to the left side) and I don't know if I COULD even run a CAT.
5. I don't feel like investing the added money...I'm only 17 and don't make the money you older folk do.
6. I don't think emissions is a big deal...I honestly could care a-less about california and all the smog-producing cars.

And for the record, Ohio doesn't have emissions testing, so I face NO legal actions, nothing to worry about. Again, if someone would like the piece of mind that I have a CAT, pay for one and pay to have it installed and I'll get one.

-Cody
I read through all the crap and come to the same place I was before. In this case you're selfish. Ok, fine, we agree to disagree.

I'll keep giving street drivers crap for it, and I'll have less respect for people who drive without one, (no matter how nice the underhood installations of parts are, Sid, ). After all, the Veyron had four, and still put out over a thousand HP.

That said, Do what you want, just be prepared to admit what you're saying.... Your putting your desire for sound (or power, or cost) over the societal benefit of running your exhaust through the cat.

Matt

ps, employers use YouTube to screen applicants. I wonder how long it will take CARB to figure out how to catch the illegal modders by trolling car forums?

Trust me many agencies are already reading these forums . I've had one of my own posts read at a morning briefing at the local CHP office and this was from a much smaller forum . Luckily it was a positive piece but it does go to show you that we are being watched . I know for sure that insurance companies do as well so why would CARB not follow suit ?

I think i'm going to go catless again...all this BS makes me want to go remove my cat! :impatient

Any other enthusiast group would not be having this discussion. They would care less if your new header has a cat or not, they would just be excited about your new mod! People taking out cats is quite common on performance cars. You don't see Ferrari owners bitching when someone decides to de-cat their 430...but then again I guess you'll just say they are arrogant rich folks that only care about themselves. LOL.

But, add another MINI with no cat to the number of other idiots with Civics, Accords, CRXs, beat up Cavaliers, etc. that are doing it and it adds up.

WEAK. . . .

It's like saying, "there are huge landfills, therefore, I can throw my trash on your lawn and it doesn't matter." That is a foolish fallacy and bad logic.

By the way, diesel trucks may seem to spout more crap in the form of black smoke, but most cars emit more "clear" pollution. . . All US cars made after 1975 have a cat. . . so that's probably 98% of everything on the road. And, there are standards for all vehicles, including yours. Also, things ARE being done about those "large" vehicles- More public and city buses and vehicles are going to alternate and hybrid technology. So, I guess that voids your arguement. Sometimes people getting "bent out of shape" is the only way things ever happen.
So you really think with the amount of MINI's on the road doing this mod is gonna make a difference to the MILLIONS of other cars causing the same problem?????

FYI....this is the wrong place to ask someone for advise because its full of people who know it all and grumpy old men. Do what you want...its your car, they're arent your parents so who carse what they have to say honestly.

I know I do give crap to my neighbor for de-catting his 355. But I don't agree that "any other enthusiast group would not be having this discussion". For the older mustangs, it's not an issue, as they don't have them. For the newer ones it sure it, and those that yank them off of thier car catch crap from me too.

Just think of the numbers. There are about 250 million cars registered. Sure, one car doesn't really make a difference, but then, if everyone went catless, it sure as hell would!

Race cars, go ahead and do what you want, street cars, keep the exhaust clean for all our sakes!

Matt

ps, I have a pretty arbitrary standard as well. I don't care about what's on the car as long as it doesn't make the car dirtier. So some could call me out for braking the law, which is correct. But my car runs clean, which is what we really ought to care about.

Very true Matt...that's where I'm coming from...BTW...you should visit Woodward Avenue (Michigan) any weekend this time of year...talk about Big Iron and Leaded Gas making a come back... Some of these guys have a whole garage full of them...:impatient

I'm sure for my "little transgression", St Peter will let me through the gates for having taken the cat off one little 1.6 liter motor that is meticulously maintained and tuned...BTW...must suck to live in Socialist Republic of Kalifornia...

Haha thanks for laugh. Always enjoy sitting back and reading these posts. This argument could go on for years... And at the end of the day, those running catless still won't care what those of you that aren't have to say about it. That's just the way life is. Honestly, I don't know why you bother wasting your time flaming someone for not running a cat. At the end of the day, their car is still catless and you've wasted part of your day, time which you will never get back, to raise an argument that will go on UNHEARD...

With that said, running catless does net you gains, when your running a head and properly tuned... And please, don't flame me because I'm running stock header and will be for a while (just too expensive)..

Oh and, for those of you still using the "you sound like a 16yr old" ********, get over it. You were there once too and I can outright GUARANTEE you were no perfect child... So get over yourself...

ps, I'm not bummed that CA lead the way with emmissions control that lead to converters that lead to fuel injection that lead to unbelievable power outputs of todays motors, but I do really hate that 91 passes for premium here!

Actually I just moved back from colorado where Randy Webb was my neighbor and he did alot of work to my car. I have the webb motorsports intake box, crank pulley, 15% pulley, B&M short throw, miltek exhaust this is actually one of the last mods i will do for a while. I was just making sure that replacing the header and still leaving the stock cat on there wont throw anything. I appreciate everyones help.

Wow, what an unbelievably pessimistic attitude. You probably don't vote, because, how could one vote make a difference . . .

You can't think of pollution or affecting the environment, as "compared to", you need to think of it as "on top of, or in addition to". The problem with most people is that they don't understand that they are part of the community, city, state, country, world. . . Individualism is engrained so deep in some that they are completely oblivious to the rest of the group and think that their actions, the actions of just "one, tiny person" couldn't possibly affect the whole. That is untrue.

Things add up- if I pissed in your pool when you had a party with a thousand people there, you would be angry, but you would probably not notice. . . I mean, c'mon, that's only 1/10 of a percent of the whole party pissing in your pool. . . then if twenty people pissed in your pool, that's still only 2 percent. . . is that still OK? Even though your pool would smell and taste like ****? And could you even say anything to the rest of the guests? Like "stop pissing in my pool!"? Probably not, because:

"Hey, guys, I'm thinking about setting up my cooling system to leak about a quart of coolant everyday onto the street as I drive. I just like the way it sounds! Power gains, too. 1/3 hampster power added. What? What? No way, someone will have to pay to put the hose back into place, I don't have the money for that. . . I'll never get busted, not even if a random dog were to lap up my drip trail and die. . . It's my car anyway and I'll do what I want with it. Plus, there are a million other cars doing the same thing. That's right, a MILLION. Isn't that a huge, unfathomable number? When you have those kinds of odds it can't be even close to making a difference. I mean, chlorine gas can be fatal ONLY at .1% concentration in the atmosphere. That's, like, a lot, right? Wow, numbers and ratios make my head hurt. OOOoo. . . a popsicle!"

This is pretty much what I hear a lot of.
