Drivetrain Official ALTA™ Q&A thread PART TWO 2nd Generation MINI

ghL17, I think the responses you get will vary with how and where the car is driven.
In my experience, I still hear the CAI over the turboback. Not quite as much as before, but certainly that cool sound is still there. Compounded coolness with the exhaust sound.
Again, in my experience. the exhaust makes a nice deep throaty sound at idle (like there's a real engine packed in there) and a somewhat spectacular series of sounds as you wind it up through the gears.
On level surfaces, holding a given speed (for ex. highway) I can barely hear the exhaust. BUT, I live in a hilly area and going up a long steady grade, or in my case a 2km steep hill, anything around 3K rpm does drone. Loudly. OK, this may be due in part because I have pulled the rear seats. But I have dynamat and 6 in of foam (photo gear) under a 5/8 in sheet of birch ply and a thick rubber mat (see my gallery) so I kind of doubt the seat-delete is making the difference.
Would I do it again. Absolutely. Does my wife like it...not so much. But she has her own car.
I'm kind of hoping the ECU will sort out the 3K performance dip and perhaps that will make a positive difference.

On the 3K dip!
Check to see the road speed when that occurs. We have found that the DSC being on over 70mph, limits boost and tapers response.
Just an FYI!
Thanks again folks!

Thanks Adam, I hadn't heard about DSC and over 70mph (113km/h).
Certainly the rural road speed limit up my hill is 50km/h (30mph). And, because there are houses on both sides, a person should really race up, right? (Even if it is a good place to check on the effect of each added mod...)
Do you think the ECU allows a bit more choice in terms of gear/rpm?

On the DSC. Jeff has noted that in some situations over 70 mph with the DSC on not off, that it limits boost and therefore power. He noted that when he turned the DSC off that it allowed higher boost levels. (this was irregardless of the ALTA ECU.)
We were doing a ton of dyno stuff today and I FULLY anticipate some dyno plots and numbers to be up and on the site ASAP.
Teasers are kool!

Alta R56 Turbo Kit
The fitment looks really nice. Very curious to see what kind of power they will be getting from it.
I've been wondering how a twin charged R53 with a R56 turbo would do, so if anyone reading this does the Alta Turbo kit, let me know if you want to sell the stock unit...
...or...I could just get a R56 MCS and the Alta Turbo kit...man, did I just say that?
