Drivetrain Official ALTA™ Q&A thread PART TWO 2nd Generation MINI
#151
My guess is around 275-300whp is realistic. I think the mini would be an absolute rocket ship with that!

This is a GOOD question and one we intend to find out without putting the pistons through the sides of the block! More than likely the engine in proper tune can handle 300 WHP. But we need to find out for sure. More information will come out as we approach that number.
Thanks again folks!

scott48: It all depends. I can't really give you that information until I have more information to share that is accurate. But the OEM turbo has produced more than 2 bar at some points of the RPM band.

I am in the same boat. MarioKart smoked me a couple of weeks ago. We were dead even in first and second gear.....then it was a joke...He got me by many car lengths.
I NEED more power!

We ALL need more boost. Things are a coming folks. MY apologies for the delay. Again, what we are up to is NOT earth shaking, but will be an ALTA properly tuned setup for the car and allows for on the fly map changes.
Thanks again folks!

sc0TT48: That is certainly better than if the vent was completely blocked. Jeff claims there is some reduction in HP as a result. I have mine in the same condition as yours and will try to simulate in and out on the dyno and see if I can get an accurate number.
TWON: There could be. Historically most clients are not interested in mileage, regardless we try to build as much economy in the cruise sections of any map.
Thanks again!

I just took mine out all together. There are a few posts of people worrying about water, but I seriously doubt that it would be an issue.

I noticed that but it was on a picture you posted on the intercooler thread but I didn't want to go off topic. The more air the merrier, even if you don't notice it in HP gain. I never had any trouble with my Impreza STi from water or debris brought in through the GIANT hood scoop, just a few bugs to pick off of the intercooler from time to time. I read somewhere else on NAM someone dremeled out the closed sections of the grill to keep the black grille look. I'm just going to wrestle it off when my CAI arrives though. There's no room for spare parts under that hood!

Alta:
I was checking the numbers on your FMIC, are the figures with just the FMIC installed vs. stock R56? 20whp and 30 ft. lbs torque is very impressive.
Will it be pointless to install the CAI then, if I want to install the FMIC?
Thanks
PS: also, forgot to ask if I need any special tools to install the FMIC? I have some basic tools but no soldering or blow torch.

byhsu: The intake is still vitally important to making more HP. Intercoolers and Intakes do different things. There are no special tools required other than a couple torx bits, screwdriver, utility knife, etc. No big deal! Thanks for asking!

Torgue loss ? .. from what ? I'd love to learn some things so someone post on here and learn me a thing or two
The only related concept I've heard so far is perhaps a more "free flow" exhaust might raise horse power with less back pressure, losing torque.. how though?
ps- I'm a 19 yr old Cedarville student lookin to learn some more engineering so help me out you gearheads!
