Pinging

Yesterday I had a strange thing happen. I boosted to about 10psi from a 30mph roll and heard my car pinging (pre detonation) I quickly go off the gas. I was not sure if thats really what it was so I tried again and same thing...sounded like a bunch of marbels in a can. I quickly got off the gas. I drove home and picked up my brother...i wanted him to hear the noice to confirm what i was hearing. For whatever reason I could not get it to ping again? 91 Octane Shell, 83 Degrees, flat ground. I was about 1/2 through my tank of gas and it has been running very strong. This morning I drove it and no problems at all? Why would it ping for a few rolling runs and then not again?

Thanks!

maybe its a bad gas - mayby its a bad kharma try to use hi-octane gas one time, and try to drive when U have less than 1/4 of tank - if the problem goes again - look (and photo) your plugs - maybe they dead

In states the highest octane rating is 91. Unless of course you find those remote stations that sell racing gas for $6 a gallion >_<

Umm...I fill up with 93 every week.

Speak for yourself on the West Coast. Whole Southeast is 93.

In the state of Idaho, we run everything from 89 to 93, and there's one station with racing fuel. I run 93 at all times.

It could be carbon build up in your combustion chamber creating hot spots that are firing the charge prior to spark. Pop out your plugs and take a peak at your piston tops. A few guys here have used 'Sea Foam' to de-coke their combustion chambers and piston tops. Good luck!

Sea Foam FTW! Worked wonders on my Miata. I put it in the oil, gas tank, and through the Throttle Body.

My mistake, the west is all 91. So depending on where he is located he may not have access to gas higher than 91 octane.

Thats funny about the pinging, because when my car was stock i for the most part (except track events) ran 87 octane, 10psi, not a single problem. even now with gas over $4. I am considering going back to 87 because I never use boost on the street (responsible driver)
