Working on intercooler piping today

IM going to attempt to make some intercooler pipes today.

It will have provisions for mounting a BOV on it. I will be bypassing the noise generator too. If its not needed, "off with his head!"

The factory hoses are made of rubber. WHen the car goes into boost the hose swell up causing you to loose boost. When the hoses are warm it swells even more! Just by replacing the hoses on the Neon srt4 we got 1.5psi increase, on the EVO x we got 2psi, on the STI 2psi. The more rubber usually the more boost you get from it. Its not always the case but for 1 PSI of boost you get 1ohp (crank).

We will be installing a BOV on the pipe too for those who want it.

A a bov is NOT for making sound, those 99.9%of the people get it for that.
When you install a bov you will noticed the following:

Quicker recovery after a shift. WHat does that mean? IM sure you have heard the text book 101 reason for a bov. It prevents compressor surge. Yes thats one thing it does. A larger BOV can vent out more volume so you will noticed the following.

When your racing the engine, when you shift the boost does not go back up to 12psi etc right away. There is a slight delay before it does. Lets just say that it takes 300rpm before you hit full boost again right after a shift.

With an upgraded BOV, you will noticed that right after the shift, you will hit full boost at about 100rpm after the shift. This brings your power back online sooner, and thats what your suppose to notice with a BOV if your looking for it instead of looking for the sound.

I personally prefer to leave the factory surge valve in place and use it in conjunction with an upgraded bov. It works better being that you have two valves unloading the system. The only issue i have with stock surge valves of today is that its controlled by a solenoid. This causes added lag so i will be bypassing the stock surge valve today and will show you how its done when i have pix etc.

On a car thats a full MAF setup you have issues of it stumbling because there are no map sensors in the system. The mini has both so yes it will run a tad rich when you lt off the gas and stop at light etc. HOwever when your going through the gears and shift its not a big issue because that added fuel helps keep the turbo spooling when it lights in the manifold. Its not like you will be cruising on teh highway and running rich to where your fuel milage will go down. YOur fuel milage will go down because you will get on it more to hear it vent .

My local custoemrs ask me if their fuel will go upw ith an exhaust mod. i tell them yes and then no. I tell them that the added music will cause them to get on the gas a little more when they leave a light. I know till this day im guilty of that.

I just looked over the factory bov and noticed that its it has 0 vaccum line going to it. :( IM going to see if i can disconnect it and trick it so it wont cause a CEL issue and ill have the aftermarket control boost on its own. Ill see what i come up with.

HELP!!!!!

Dudes the pipes are NIGHT AND DAY!!!!!!!!!!! I did both the hot and the cold side pipe. THe great news is that the thing is pulling like a monster. YOu feel it really good in 3rd.

The bad news:

The hose popped on me for rushin and trying tog et out of here. 9pm. : (

The stock piping is 2" in some spots. Im giogn to use those resonators for an exhaust im workign on. I went 2.25" on the plumbing and on the cold side i opened it up to 2.75" right before teh throttle body. I could not beleive how big the stock throttle body is for having such a small turbo system on this car!

I did both, the problem is that i cut one of the elbows a tad to short so i had to hold the silicon against the turbo while tightening the clamps.

Keep on keeping on Hector, if you know the problem was one of the elbows was cut short then you can rectify it right? Really excited to see the finished products, no CEL issues on your short run?

Less than $270 and its $50 more with an HKS flange welded on the pipe. The setups will be powdercoated though .

yes i will be watching. anyway to make a bigger cold side tube , the one that comes out of the intercooler into the funky plastic tube. i was looking into getting the plastic tube from pelican parts and butchering it and making my own pipe but i havent yet. or can a whole new tube be made? it would be nice but i know it would be a ton of fab work. also will the tubes be powdercoated inside and out? thank you sir and please keep going the stuff your making is stuff we need.
