Drivetrain Which intake? Alta or DDM?
#76
I think the DDM with the later option of adding the RIS is a good choice. The Alta is a nice product but the DDM uses the bottom of the stock air box. The filter is right on top of the stock air supply. Now the alta also uses the stock air supply. But the Alta has it just piping under their air filter. So some goes here some goes there... The DDM the filter is placed blocking the stock air supply so you will get more of the cool air from the stock air supply with the DDM. You can use the RIS system with the Alta if you choose but it wont work as well as using it with the DDm. Now if you have a strut bar, I dont think the DDM will fit. And the strut bar is VERY important on these cars. Here is a under hood shot of my old setup. Alta HFI (High Flow Intake), DDM RIS, M7 strut bar, ALTA PNP Unichip all working together under the same hood. I since have changed to a different setup.

So your saying the m7 strut bar works with the ram air scoop? No rattles, knocks, noises at all?

I the M7 strut bar in the back position (closest to the cab). and it did not touch at all, no rattles or anything. However I don't know about if you put the bar in the forward position? and the DDM Race (pressurized filter box) will not work with the strut bar, or any strut bar at all. Thats what DDM told me. The street intake may work I never tried it.

I wouldn't get either, but the DDM has a shield in the right place to block heat the best it can...they are open to major heatsoak unless you get a ram air scoop, then it will help its purpose by directing cooler air directly into it.
The issue is not the intakes themselves, just the placement of where it is behind the engine.
Problem is, unless you some how reduced engine temps, no matter what, heat is killing these types of intakes. You will still get great sound from either, imo, the foam gives a better sound, but if your looking for performance, I would go with the DDM RIS. Do yourself a favor and do it right the first time, otherwise you'll kick yourself later like I did!

There is tons of info here about how we started with something and ended up with what you see today. We thought a heat shield may be necessary, but it clearly isn't with the scoop removed. We proved this with temp sensors mounted behind the filter. The gains we saw were with the hood closed. And evidence that it gets nice cool air all the time is show by where the dirt collects on the filter.
Because people seem to think they need a shield weather it for function or looks, it might just be something you see us come up with soon. But until then, the M7 shield does a good job and does look kinda cool!
As Adam mentioned, we made a few changes recently to the intake to make it less expessive, easier to install and fit with more strut bars. We feel this along with our new Complete intake (CAI and Turbo inlet hose together) which we are launching this weekend. Its got a special price also to be more competitive with the NM one. Normally this combo of parts go for $385 for the both, and this new complete versions is $356.99. Making this about $70 less than one similar to it.
Anyway, thats about all for now! Look for this new part on our site this weekend!

Ya I agree about the underhood temps. In normal driving even onhot days it should be fine. But once you get to LA and you are doing 3 or 4 MPH for 2 hours just to go 10 miles and its 110 degrees outside, then I think it is hot air you will be taking into your engine. But otherwise I agree 100%. Darn LA traffic....

Hope that helps! Let me know if I can help further.
ALTA2 JEFF THANK YOU for the information! That will be really helpful for folks!

Adam, will the new CAI shroud also work with most other strut braces?
I have the CF brace from Mini Mania installed.
I got it from a friend, for less than $100 who felt it was more important to him to have a CAI under the bonnet than the brace.

But again that looks like it will work perfectly with the new style ALTA Intake.
Let me know if I can help in anyway further!

Looked at your pics on flickr and noticed your black gas cap, was that stock, or did you do a DIY or buy it??
And if you bought it where?
Any way it looks good!
BTW, I too sprung for the Alta CAI and have never looked back, great sound, good performance uptick and the price was right.

my nm eng with my grille removed and after being moving is always cool, sitting in traffic that's another story. Even with the engine up to temp as long as i'm moving, the actual aluminum pipe barely heats up. After about 5-10 min of not moving it will heat up and take a few min's of moving to cool down. aluminum changes temperature quite quickly.
