I just got an Alta intake and enjoy the sound. I know it isn't getting much in the way of +hp. Seeing people talk about the oil filters though worries me. Should I NOT be using this CAI? It looks as though many people use the Alta. That is why I chose this one.

FYI...mini noob here

Remove any access oil from any filter before use. I used paper towels and let the filter sit for a day or so.

Too many filters including Alta's come dripping in oil.

I have the Alta as well and would recommend it.

That being said I don't feel a major boost in power but there is certainly a psychological benefit. (I have put CAI's on 5 of my cars in the past and only REALLY felt a big difference in my 2003 cobra)

The car makes great sounds with a CAI though and REALLY ads to the fun for me. With a CAI on a mini you can really hear the turbo. The Alta CAI is a nice quality piece and I would buy again in a heartbeat. (Im sure other brands would do the same and are good as well)

trouble is that these type of filters are meant to be clamped onto a hard/fixed (metal) tube end, where the JCW stage 1 airbox has a fairly soft flexible rubber/plastic tube. Plus the oem filter has a support/locking end tab that helps hold it up, I'm not sure how the inner tube will hold up supporting all the weight by itself & if it'll come lose or cause rattles.

the color in their picture is a bit off, it really is almost exactly the same as the Mini Madness one you linked.
Question: If i buy an NM engineering intake, which uses an oil type filter, can i just replace the filter with an Amsoil dry filter and not run into any problems with the MAF sensor?

no reason why not.
It just sucks that all ? the aftermarket options right now use oiled filters, so you're going to pay for the filter twice to get the 'warm' air intake & then add another filter.

I did but it was not part of the CAI change. But I did not notice too much difference in sound and performance.

I've spoken to Joe at NM and he was saying that their intake system is CARB pending. Anyone that bought the kit can call NM and get the CARB stickers for free... a couple of months away he said

somewhat important for Cali motoring...

I thought I would update everyone. In Texas new cars have a inspection stick good for two years so it will be some time before I need to put the stock one back on for inspection, so I chose the NM intake. As always the NM product was first rate. Excellent step by step instruction. The installation took approximately 45 minutes.

The throttle response seems to be quicker, but not sure if that is just a perception due to the additional intake noise. Overall I am very pleased with the NM Intake. I might just have to order the new NM cat back exhaust.

I truly appreciate everyone responses on this post….

Will

CARB, the EPA, and state emissions regulations are my enemy! Crack down on China for god's sake! We are squeeky clean compared to them!
