Let's put it this way. If you happen to have an issue that is caused by the exhaust or the techs at the dealership, say the exhaust system is causing the issue, then it can void your warranty toward resolving that issue alone, not void the warranty all together (will only void what is causing the issue, to be an issue, or if they say so, even if it isn't. It's their word against yours).
Let me explain in further detail. I went into MINI of Baltimore because my CEL was on and my engine was running rough, (when it was idling, it would constantly go up and down, and sometimes almost cut out). They told me that since I added an aftermarket intake that uses a K&N oil filter, that some of the oil got into the MAF Sensor from the filter and made my MAF sensor malfunction. (They also did not say anything about the CEL.) Because of this my warranty was voided for replacing the MAF Sensor, so I would have to pay out of pocket. They wanted to charge me $600 for a new Bosch MAF Sensor (that's actually what it costs, according to bavauto.com (Bavarian Auto)) and $90 for labor to install this part, (it would only take 5 mins to install.) I told them, that I would handle it.
To make a long story short, I needed to replace the POST o2 Sensor on my exhaust to turn off the CEL and I needed to replace my spark plugs to resolve the rough idle. Cyclinder 4 had a bad plug, and was miss firing which was causing the rough idle. (I obviously replaced all four plugs.) To add some background info, I did over oil my filter and so they blamed my intake because there was a little K&N oil puddle in the lower air box. I found thru K&N site, that their oil has been tested not to malfunction the MAF sensor, but for good measure I cleaned it with approved MAF Sensor cleaner. All in all, you learn from your mistakes and try not to let that happen again.
The next week I came in to get the cold start chatter resolved. This had to do with the timing change tensior. (I am sure you have read multiple threads about this issue.) They did tell me they heard an unusual sound coming from where the tensior is located, and said when you get your MAF sensor issue resolved, come back and we will perform the tensior replacement on warranty. And so, I came back and they preformed the tensior replacement on warranty. Everything has been just swell.
Btw, my res has been deleted and I have not had any issues. (Knock on Wood.)
