Question about DDM RIS system

Hey guys, I'm thinking about getting the DDMWorks Race Intake System, which combines a ram air scoop with a pressurized intake box. The reviews suggest this is a great upgrade, but I have one concern. Installation of the RAS involves removal of the heat shield - is this a wise thing? I've heard stories (unconfirmed, some from the dealer) about the hood getting hot enough to melt the stock hood scoop. Anyone with direct experience with this product and the effects of removing the heat shield?

You're talking about the big black one under the bonnet i'm assuming. I've had the DDM RIS for 22,000 miles and my chrome hood scoop is still good as new. I know a couple of R56 owners in my MINI club that have hood scoop melting problems but they are bone stock. The dealer is going to look for any excuse not to cover that German-overpriced plastic hood scoop! There are definitely better ways to spend $500 for the powertrain though.

You'll probably be swayed to get the Defenders of Speed intake in like 5 seconds by someone here. Definitely the new Kool Aid if ya know what I mean.
