For people with the tune, do you have the pop and burble from the exhaust that was promised?
Yes, my custom tune has it, and I love it.
There are many incarnations of the tune though, and from what it sounds like not everyone has it. There is a specific piece of mapping from the JCW Challenge car which allows for the burble. It does nothing for performance, but sounds GREAT.

I figured it was because i still had both my cat's
Does it use any extra fuel when you add that in?
From what I've seen, by watching AFR's, it merely keeps the injectors open a for a split second longer after throttle lift off. Will not have a noticeable effect on MPG
So after nearly a year w/ Jan's tune (& more recently the updated tune), I just put the 'stock' map back on for a dealer visit... I could not live w/ my Mini like this... I'd grown accustomed to the increased throttle response, the extra growl from the exhaust, the torque steer, it's all gone. Once the other issues are sorted out at the dealer, I'll be putting the tune back on, and having Jan add the pop & burble next, will certainly be the cherry on top.
For anyone running the 'old' (last summers) tune, the updated version adds a lot of polish.
I did notice some torque related faults in the stability control system, eg. PT_CAN_TORQUE D365, D366, & D367 and a couple shadow faults in the ECM 2D52 & 2DCB (these were pulled with the Bavarian Tech tool, not a regular code reader which showed nothing).
Jan told me that he didn't add the pop and burble to the version he sent to the group buy just to make sure everything went okay with the basic tune. Sounds like he will be adding it soon along with some other upgrades.
In rally racing it is/was common to inject fuel directly into the turbine housing to keep the turbo spooled up at low throttle. The fuel ignites, creates heat and keeps it spinning fast at low rpms. It works great...instant boost at all times. The sound is awesome. It also eats up turbine blades so fast the turbo is toast by the end of the race, that is if the engineers got it just right. This is not what we are getting but the sound is similar without harm to the turbine blades.
Any other reason for the pop burble besides the sound? Why did mini put that in the challange series?
Mini didn't add it to the Challenge series, it's just amplified due to the larger/open'r exhaust. It was only removed from the North American R56MCS to placate some old ladies that complained about the noise (on the late R53's), rest of the world still has it from the factory. It's a classic british 4cyl sound, harking back to the days of carburetors.

Makes sense. Old ladies wrecking havoc on our mini enjoyment .
